Comments (25)kmeemsie, the difficulty in using the granite scraps as a pencil line or frame is that the granite will be thicker than the tile. Your granite is probably 2 cm or 3 cm thick. You might get your fabricator to cut or polish them to thinner, but the cost of that might be an issue. I think it could look really sharp. Our fabricator did make us some pieces 1/2" by 3/4" by 2 feet to trim the sides of our rangetop, but they did it free to cover a mistake they had made in the cutout. They did say that they can't make pieces that thin in all granites - some aren't strong enough. On the other hand, the company that made our stone wall plates says that they can make them in almost any stone and they are really thin. It may be a matter of the tools the fabricator has available....See MoreNeed help choosing backsplash - pics included!
Comments (101)It's still a side splash, which I typically wouldn't tile, even though there's a cab over it. But you have a sink nearby. The granite looks tight to the wall, so I think caulk and a washable paint is enough protection from occasional splashing. If you leave standing water from draining dishes, I'd tile, but I doubt you do that with white granite. You could tile it the height of the raised bar, which I think is what you intend with your finger placement. But that leaves a small area of wall between the tile and cabinet, which would look like you ran out of tile if it were done on a row of cabinets. So you could do just two rows of tile. I would bring it to the end of the counter in that case, but normally I'd say stop at the upper cabinet. Tape some up and let's see what looks best....See MoreWhite cabs, black counters & a backsplash other than white?
Comments (17)FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Our floors are hardwood, by the way--similar to the color in pic #2 or just a touch lighter. Thanks again for all the input!...See MoreHelp with granite backsplash and maple cabs, please!
Comments (57)Thanks April! We will have to remove the mantel and corbels (brings a set of issues w/ patching where corbels were, drilling for electricity, etc...), but want to mount TV on fireplace, as my boys like watching the TV from island. They eat at the island often. Also, there would be a glare on the perpendicular wall from the windows. It's not bad on the hearth! But, I'd also like to cover as much of the fireplace as possible! I get your point about the books on shelves, adding items to tie everything in. I feel like if the island were white, it would help tie some other elements, pantry door, white trim and white blinds. It may make it easier with the granite choice also. If I stay with current granite, or change. I think it would help to lighten up kitchen overall and break up the woods. I like the darker island idea, but think it may not work as well in my kitchen....See MoreRelated Professionals
