I am in Mexico & have issues....or concerns
Comments (19)Since you have more land available, it may be more practical to look into John Jeavons' Biointensive mini-farm methods. His materials are available in many languages, including Spanish. The English-language title of his primary book is "How to Grow More Vegetables (than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine)." In Spanish, his book is "Cultivo Biointensivo de Alimentos: Más Alimentos en Menos Espacio." Available at www.bountifulgardens.org. Jeavons' techniques focus on 100-sq-ft plots + compost. Since you have the small animals and other terrific compost resources, plus people who are used to physical labor (Jeavons' double-digging will therefore not be surprising to them), his methods might resonate better with them. Also, there is no cost of raised beds with Jeavons' methods, as there is with Mel Bartholomew's. Even with mostly salvaged materials, I still had to spend some money (which I didn't really have) this year on my three small SFG beds. Other Biointensive publications in Spanish: --"Huertos Familiares," by Juan Manuel Martinz. "Booklet used by the nationwide program in Mexico to teach Biointensive mini-farming at the introductory level," according to information in the back of my 7th-ed. Jeavons book. --"Rotofolio Huertos Familaries," by the same author: Flipchart used for teaching Biointensive mini-farming in villages in Mexico (this might be more useful if you're dealing with non-literate people). Side note: there was a 6.5 or so earthquake near Chiapas recently. Did it affect your community? Perhaps something positive, like Biointensive methods, will help avert future food shortages from whatever factors. Best wishes; buena suerte! Comments (31)Although I don't have any personal experience with this.... I have been with my hubby for 22 years, and we started dating when I was 16 and he was 17, and we are happily married. I do know that it will not get any better without some sort of intervention. You are a smart young lady to not bring children into this situation. You deserve a hug and a pat on the back for knowing that having children, with this type of volatile man, would be a bad idea. Children are wonderful gifts, but they DO NOT fix any situation. They make everything more complicated and stressful. That I know very well. I had my children young, and I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into! I think that your instincts are telling you all that you need to know. Making a big change like leaving him, is so very difficult, but from reading your post, you know that it is your only choice. Be smart and careful. I have heard of stories of verbally abusive men becoming physically abusive when their wives try to leave. He needs to do some work on himself and try to figure out why he is so volatile. Without that kind of realization, there is no hope for your relationship. In fact, there is not hope for him to have a successful relationship with any woman. Do what you need to, and be safe. You deserve a partner that loves you and values you. Someone that is a stress reliever, not a stress creator. I've told many people in my life..... Your partner should be the one person in the world that you can share your life with and make everything that has gone wrong, feel right. Blessings and prayers to you........See MoreQuestion: Overnight Sleeping/Bed Issue
Comments (8)It might work better if she doesn't need permission. I have one dog who wanted to sleep on the bed from the time we got her but I wouldn't allow it and would put her back in her own bed and she got used to that. But over time she would sneak up there during the night at times (usually only if it was cold) so I would let her stay up there because I knew she just wanted a bit of body warmth. She has to go to sleep in her own bed and if she gets up on our bed during the night that's ok, and most of the time we don't realise she's in bed with us until the morning but it's not even a nightly thing. I just think if you're going to let her up there during the night then just let her do it without permission because she has to wake you up for that, but just make her go to her own bed at the beginning of the night until you fall asleep....See MoreCan't sleep - I think I may hate my newly finished floors (PICS)
Comments (50)I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Has anyone tried tinting the final coat to tone down the orange/reds? Does that work? Appreciate any help/advice. Thank you all!...See Morealways1stepbehind
