Still small but much BETTER bedrooms - Thanks to this forum!
Comments (38)What a pleasant surprise to see this thread revived! Yes, in fact, we are still in the design phase (we had to go back to the drawing board a bit after the bids came back too high and decided to hold off on construction for financial reasons). But now we're back going at it at full speed (just decided on a contractor yesterday). And we're working on final changes to the plans (so now's a great time to get this feedback). We had to get rid of the walk-out basement (and the slide and trap-door pits) and the office space and guest space over the garage. To make up for those losses, we have added a multipurpose room on the first floor (can be used as a master suite when my husband can't climb stairs in the future and can be used as a media room/ library/ guest suite/ additional bedroom or nanny suite now. We also expanded the mudroom/powder room (added a shower) and changed the three-car garage to a barn to reflect more accurately how we will use it (as a play area/workshop area rather than for our cars). I'll post the new plans on a new post rather than keeping this old one going . . . . But just to answer the concerns on this one, we did increase the size of the children's bedrooms a little by moving the laundry into the previous master bath/closet area. We do already intend for our two boys (yes, we've had another baby boy since this post - part of the reason for the delay) to share the larger room. And as far as furniture placement, we did change the location of the TV, get rid of the pit, and move the west wall of the living room back (since the slide is no longer there). I plan on putting two sofas facing one another and perpendicular to the TV in the middle of the room and maybe a chair or two on the side. I'd welcome your thoughts on the new plan. We really have made quite a few changes (and after this is finalized it will be much harder to make more). Thanks! -- Micah...See MoreStanley Bedroom Furniture - Better Prices??
Comments (1)I am in the process of buying a couple of rooms of new furniture for a new home. I recently ordered two leather sofas from Elite Interitors in SC - I had never heard of them before looking on this board for who had the best prices. I've been dealing with Cheryl and shes been very helpful. About 8 years ago I bought a new bedroom and dining room set from Furniture land South, (saving over 5K from local store)this was back when they didn't charge sales tax OR shipping, but for these sofas FurnitureLands price was 21% over Elites! I own a local business, and really try to support local business, but unfortuneately, their quotes have been SIGNIFICANTLY higher then the NC/SC stores. In my case my local "discount" furniture store, who says they have the best prices-Their price was 38% more than Elite. If it came down to a couple hundred more to buy locally I would, but its been thousands. And those savings include their shipping charges.. I guess it depends where you are though. I also checked prices with Lexington Furniture in KY. (also found on this forum) For the particular items I was looking for, they were just a little higher than Elite, also with a very nice salesperson, maybe they would have matched, but after talking to Cheryl since she was so helpful, I stuck with them. Hopefully delivery will be on time and go smoothly. I have also bought from Boyles in NC. I would call 3 or 4 of those and see how they match your local store, some have sales tax, some have shipping, just make sure you consider all costs. Good Luck!...See MoreIs this bedroom set too massive for my bedroom? (pics!)
Comments (51)Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?...See MoreHow to make a TV in a bedroom look nice?
Comments (43)I agree with Tina, "Having a TV or not is a personal choice. I don't think any of us should be telling you whether or not to do it.". As for how to make a bedroom tv look nice, I agree that it can just sit on top of a dresser or table, if you like. Another idea is to tuck it into an armoire. Our bedroom tv is on one and I love it. I can close the doors when we're not watching it. We use ours every morning M-F, catching the morning news while DH gets ready for work. Sunday - Thurday evenings, I like to watch it for 30 minutes or so while ironing DH's shirt for work the next day. DH is usually in his study finishing up his paperwork then. We've made a conscious decision not to watch tv shows or movies in the bedroom together and it works for us, but this is definitely a personal thing for everyone and there are no right or wrong answers IMO. BTW, having a tv in our bedroom has not impacted our romantic life at all (LOL). We have a tv cab with a lift system in our family room. I like it because when the tv is down (inside of it), you can see my artwork hanging on the wall above the console. The downside to many of these consoles, though, is that the tv comes up through the top of it, making the top of the console unusable to put anything on it, such as a lamp. I love Geokid's suggestion of using mirrors or artwork to slide or close over a wall-mounted tv when you want it to disappear. I realize, though, that you have to also have room for the tv components someplace. When we get rid of the lift console, DH and I would like to downsize to a wall-mounted tv that we can hide behind a painting when not in use , with a narrow cab underneath it to hold any tv components.
