paper bathroom cups vs. newspaper pots
Comments (24)jodie74, I'd recommend making newspaper pots or using paper towel tube pots instead...last year I used both and they worked great for my morning glory seeds. By the time they were ready to plant out, the roots were almost growing out the bottom, so I think the bathroom cups might just be a bit too small to allow for root growth, unless you plan to plant our fairly quickly, or transplant into a larger container. Also, most brands of paper coffee cups and bathroom cups these days have a thin plastic coating over the paper made of a chemical called polyethylene. Polyethylene is not biodegradable, and takes centuries to break down in the soil, which is why most paper coffee cups and bathroom cups are not recyclable. You can tell if your paper bathroom cup is coated in polyethylene or not if the inside walls of the cup feel smoother and look more shiny than the outside walls of the cup. People are working now to develop corn-based coatings for paper cups instead of the plastic/polyethylene, but the newer polyethylene-free cups are kind of expensive. If you use paper towels, the tube is free! You can also use toilet paper tubes. I'm pretty sure both are un-coated paper and will biodegrade/break down safely in your garden soil....See MoreWill it make it in the newspaper???
Comments (5)I got an email back this morning. She said it is exactly what she is looking for. Ask several other questions, such as how did I hear about it, when did I join, have I ever had any problems. That type of thing. And wanted to know if I could include a pic. We've had a couple of frosts here so my flowers are looking kind of sad. I'll have to go out to see what I can move over there to set up a decent picture. Glad I got my new camera (well it's 4 months old now but it'll be new to me till I figure it all out...about 10 year from now..hehe)...See MoreSisters Under the Skin
Comments (63)I brought this up to the top after listening to a radio programme about the US on-line organisation called Mom's Rising. This is a fast growing group concerned with the lack of maternity leave/benefits/women's rights which are taken for granted by us in Europe and many other countries in the 'under-developed' world but are not available to American women. Apparently the US is on a par with Swaziland, Togo and Papua-New Guinea when it comes to fair treatment for working mothers, mothers-to-be or mothers who want to return to the work place. Cindy, I was visited recently by an old friend who has taught for the last twenty years plus in the 'reception' class of an Infant school ie. the youngest children who start full time at four years old. She pointed out that these days all schools with pupils up the age of eleven (when they transfer to secondary school) have to offer/provide extra care either before or after school for any parent that requires it. She said several of her four-year-olds arrive at school at 7.30 where they are given breakfast . . .cereal and toast . . . and work in school all day. At 3.30 'home time' these same kids plus some others have to wait to be picked up by a bus which takes them to another school which offers 'after school activities' and a snack until maybe 5.30 to 6 in the evening when they are finally taken home by parents or grandparents. This is in a very rough and ready part of the county and makes me wonder at the life-styles of the more middle class parents who work even longer hours. The friend said some of these 4 year olds are so tired they find it difficult to stay awake in class. The link below lets you hear the programme or use it as a podcast . . . something I understand nothing about. ;-) Here is a link that might be useful: Mom's Rising...See MoreDo you read the newspaper comic strips?
Comments (22)We only buy the Sunday paper so DH can get the TV guide. He's not as computer dependent as I am. Still wants the TV guide even though he only watches one show,The Big Bang Theory, when football season isn't here. I look at the ads and sometimes skim the paper. The quality of the print and the paper is so bad I find it annoying. I do read comics online now and then. DH reads them online daily, has a tab on his browser for them. Now I have to go check out Zits. LOL...See MoreSherry8aNorthAL
