Favorite Basil Strain?
Comments (10)My favorite by far is Osmin. It's a purple, so maybe some purists wouldn't want to rank it first for that reason, but it has the most exquisite flavor of all basil. Every year for about 10 years, I've tested and retested to make sure, and I'm always surprised by how extraordinary it is. It is the only basil - and I have tasted just about everything available - that has this elusive perfumey flavor that is impossible to describe. It has some similarity maybe to Cinnamon basil's flavor in a way, but not sweet and cloying like Cinnamon. Its big selling point is its high proportion of all purple seedlings, but the flavor is the reason to get it, IMO. I will say it is uniquely beautiful, recognizable from a distance, because it has a unique glossy sheen the other purple cultivars lack. It almost appears to be black. Its only fault is its relative lack of vigor. Doesn't produce much. We grow a ton of basil every year and make different pestos with it, and I love to make an all Osmin pesto - a real luxury, but I also like to mix it with Genovese, which is probably the second best basil, IMO. We think Genovese is the best green, but sometimes grow a more productive one - like Napoletano or just regular Sweet (Common) basil for fill, or for a lighter flavor. Genovese is really spicy, kind of hot. For lemon cultivars, I like Sweet Dani the best. Does anyone think Napoletano and Red Rubin taste like burnt rubber?...See Morewhat type of basil is this...
Comments (6)Is it just one plant? It's quite bushy for a sweet basil, and the leaves are a bit smallish. I would guess that it's a type of greek bush basil. It will have similar taste properties to sweet basil, and can be used in the same way. I hadn't really heard that basil keeps bugs away from tomatoes, but there is something where basil planted with tomatoes makes both taste better, so it's still a good thing to have them co-planted. It will last longer if you keep the flowers pinched off. You can start harvesting at any time now--general rule is to take up to 1/3 of the plant at a time. Basil works best if you take the top thirds of each stem, rather than cutting whole stems. You'll want to cut the stem just above a leaf juncture--this will encourage further growth. As the last post said, if you can't keep up with eating it, basil freezes better than it dries. I recommend just washing and letting the leaves dry, then putting it into a zip bag, pulling out just what you want to use. You can also process it and freeze in ice cube trays....See MoreFavorite Recipes with Basil
Comments (12)I freeze my pesto in ice cube trays and them put them in freezer bags. Some easy basil recipes: Fresh tomatoes and pasta:While your pasta is cooking chop several tomatoes, toss them with chopped basil, a touch of red wine vinegar and chopped garlic. When the pasta is just done, toss it with the tomato mix. Potato pesto pizza: boil or bake small new potatoes until they are just tender. Cool them to room temperature and slice 1/4 inch thick. Slice a small red onion 1/8 inch thick. Spread the potatoes and onion over an oiled, unbaked pizza crust. Bake until almost done. Remove from the oven and spread pesto over the whole pizza. Bake another couple of minutes until the pesto starts to bubble. Basil is also good in potato salad, with wild rice and in a tomato-mozzarella salad....See MoreWhat's your favorite thing to do with fresh basil?
