Best method to control blackberry cane borer
Comments (4)Going in I thought this was going to be my berry of choice. Everything I read indicated that if you water when needed most of the other issues would take care of itself. I guess I was drinking the kool-aid. Without exception my Natchez, Apache, and Triple crown has borer infestation. As stated earlier the small number of canes per crown would mean removing 3/4 of crop. I prefer not to use insecticide but will be willing to if I can do during the non-crop time. Thanks, and and other information is welcome....See MoreDilemma of the Emerald Ash Borer

Best treatment?
Comments (10)OK, I've been growing squash on a site that has made Zucchini and melons impossible because of squash borers since planting my first garden here, 20 years ago. The cucumber beetles also make cucumbers a short lived crop even when keeping covered until well into bloom. I have a business of installing, and caring for home and estate orchards so I see a lot of kitchen gardens in our area when tending these orchards. Many sites don't have an issue with squash borers or cucumber beetles- probably because surrounding vegetation doesn't support them. So plant what you want but if you run into trouble the only answer I've found is to find varieties that root from the vine as they grow- that's why butternut works as a winter squash. If you can't grow zuke- don't fret. Koosa squash is tastier in my opinion, can be used the same way and provides me with a long season of fruit because of its tendency to root from the vine....See Morehelp iris borer
Comments (24)Just updating this old thread because I used the info. here to deal with an infestation of borers in my plants, and wanted to add that if you are going to do the soaking treatment, definitely soak 24 hours as stated above - don't cheat! I soaked about 30 rhizomes in a 10% bleach solution for 12 hours. After a short time in the water, two fat borers came out of two plants. over the course of a couple of hours, a couple more came out, then no more. I knew there were borers in the other plants, because I could see their holes. I left them soaking over night and figured after 12 hours, any that were still in there were surely drowned. So, I took them out and laid them out to dry. The next morning I came out to check on them, and there were two borers poking their ugly heads out, still alive. They didn't seem well, but they were most certainly not dead. So, a word of warning - 12 hours in bleach is not enough to kill these persistent buggers!...See Morelilnsam
