OT - my garden projects

The men finished the shed pad today so now I have a chance to post my garden wall project that started last spring/summer along with my front bed which needs an expansion.I love rudbeckias but this year they are getting a bit out of control along with the yarrow.

Stone walls, steps and patio completed by local landscaper and I added in the bedding plants and bushes this spring. They are starting to fill out nicely. I'm still trying to find something to hide the electrical and cable boxes. Can't dig too deeply since the lines run near the walls. I added coneflowers, phlox, lavender, hot pokers, bee balm, rudbeckia and lupines, I'm sure I missed naming some. I call this the hill side gardens. Snuffed out all the grass, mulched as best as I could but it still needs more. The landscaper is coming back in a couple of weeks to hopefully put a gravel path out from where he left off last year and mulch the rest.

I'm thinking to move the rose bush and trellis out of that spot by the upper wall. Still thinking on that. I don't like the trellia hiding the upper wall.

Flagstone patio is 12 x 14.

The front garden beds. The rudbeckia, yarrow and balloon flowers are taking over so expansion is in the works to move some of them out perhaps to the hill side garden where bushes are planted. I moved the two hydrageas I had in the small bed to the hill side gardens. That small bed does not get a lot of sun closer to the porch. Right now i have 4 dayliies in that area. Isle of Patmos, Earth And All Stars,Filled to Overflowing and Allegheny Skyline. Plus a bleeding heart which has now outgrown its spot.

That is Rocks Cry Out next to the yarrow on the end towards driveway.

Planning to expand to the right and around the crape Myrtle tree. Walking/gardenng path between where I left off and the new area. I have a lot of soil/compost mix left from my veggie garden raised beds so will mix that in to this horrible clay soil. I think this will give the existing daylilies more room and get more sun.

So far that is it for today. Yes a lot of work but I enjoy it. Thunderstorm predicted for this afternoon and rain, rain, rain into the evening hours.

Your projects look wonderful, and your perennials have really taken off big time! I'm envious of your beautiful stacked stone walls. The gravel path with the stepping stones looks fantastic. By next year, your gardens will ready to be photographed by Home and Garden Magazine.

Wow, Julia that looks terrific! gardening on a slope must be a bit tricky. Had a thought, how about an obelisk instead of that white trellis???

Let me count my blessings: I may not have many daffodils, but then on the other hand I don't have gophers, and I don't believe I'd trade. I hope your roses recover! I don't think climate here is the problem with daffodils. Temperate climate bulbs do fine: I've had a handful of tulips and another handful of hyacinths in mice-protected beds and they come back year after year in spite of the most complete neglect; the hyacinths also seed. The daffodils are the only ones I dare allow out in the open garden, and I think our pottery-quality clay is just too heavy for most kinds. I'm not sure whether the white Triandrus is 'Thalia'--it may be, there's another old variety in commerce. But it's a lovely kind and very steady. I saw a few narcissus blooming this spring where I had planted varieties in years past, and it gave me some hope that one day the soil may actually improve to the point that I can have a population of them. Poet's narcissus is native here, though not common, so I decided to try them down in our woods, and so far the experiment looks promising: my first small batch of bulbs is coming up for the third season, and last fall's larger planting is sprouting. Your daffodils are really lovely.

Ken, no worries, you're good! That was not what I meant at all :) I talked to a local turtle expert/rescuer who helps clear new construction sites in our area. They often find turtles and relocate them before the machinery moves in. I understand she's passionate about the subject but... sheesh. And come to think about it, while she was berating me that "they are not pets," she also bragged that she had a pen full of them in her backyard and she could take mine. Oh, well, I'm glad it's over -- I'm exhausted.

summersrhythm.....you are right about people these days not wanting to do hard, thorny manual labor. One of the main reasons I never grew a lot of roses is because there weren't many people around here who know anything about roses, or care to work with them because of their thorns. When I initially hired Jose (he is only 28, by the way) it was to clear the bed with the last remaining roses. Everything was being thrown away and my plan was to plant a low maintenance garden of mostly boxwood. He pulled out about 10 raggedy rose bushes and, I thought, put them in the truck to haul to the recycling. At the end of the day, I noticed the roses had been neatly trimmed and stacked off to the side. I reminded him that they were garbage. He asked if I would mind if he took them home and gave them to his mother to plant in her garden. Then he told me all about his mother and her incredible green thumb, and her love of roses and how he helped her take care of them. I asked him if he would be willing to help me plant, and most importantly, maintain, a rose garden. He was so excited at the prospect!! I feel incredibly lucky to have met someone with a passion for flowers and roses who is also young and strong and full of energy. I think there ARE young people out there who would be interested, but they would probably have to have a love of roses to take on working in a large, mature rose garden like Jackie's. If things don't work out with Jackie's nephew, maybe try reaching out to the University of Davis and see if they have any students who are looking for that kind of experience. I know that when I was in my early 20's, my friend and I were absolutely rose obsessed! We would have JUMPED at the chance to work in a rose garden like Jackie's. She went on to study viticulture at Davis. I WISH I had gone to Davis! I went to cooking school instead, which I don't regret...but I may revisit my Davis dream when my kids are older :)

What great garden landscape projects you have going on! Having a clean slate must have been exciting and daunting at the same time. Your perennials have really taken off-that yarrow is amazing. Whatever you mixed into that clay is working well.

That's really coming along. The stonewall is one of my favorite things. They make such a statement just by themselves. Is that gravel in between the steps? Will you plant it with things like Thyme, Erigeron or other drought tolerant creeping garden plants?........The last bed pictured is already so full and lush. You've done and are doing such a great job.............Maryl
