June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Walk for those who can’t, and for those who are too busy, or too exhausted, caring for loved ones and clients with dementia to walk.

Great fundraiser. I suggestgiving the caregiver a chance to go for walk or just time to him/ herself by sitting with the patient for an hour or two.

There are a number of ways to approach your land planning. If I remember correctly, this is a second home. It sounds as though you want to develop a self sustaining property. Okay...let's tackle the two major problems first. Heavy winds that blow slate roof off. I can't promise you that any windbreak is going to solve this problem. Suggest that on the very wet, windward side of property you plant just one tree variety in three staggered rows; Bald cypress(Taxodium distichum). Toward the house side, about 40' from the trees install two rows of grapes spaced 20' apart (or so you can run a mower between comfortably). (Note: Always keep ease of mowing in mind when you add anything to a large property.) Think of the grapes as a windbreak, also. They would not have to be grown with the usual precision of pruning, etc. Just the foliage controlled as needed. Should you desire, plant in front of the grapes a mixed shrub border. Raise them up on a slight berm above water table. Viburnums, blueberries, even dwarf fruit trees could be grown on this berm. If wind is a summer problem then veggie garden would probably have to be enclosed with a solid board fence, dwarf fruit trees espaliered along the outside. Garden might be best situated in the square formed by barn and shed, as wide as you want to make it. If the deer find you it may be necessary to install an electric fence outside the garden area to prevent them from fence jumping. The 'V' between the sidewalks by the house looks like a spot for a parterre garden of kitchen herbs plus an ornamental, small tree, limbed up, planted at the sidwalk 'V'. A more upright growing ornamental tree than many of the other crab trees. Just a few quick thoughts for you. Your best advisors are neighboring farmers who know the territory. walk out basement VS non-walk out type

I went back and forth with deciding on a walk out or not. I think the same way you do, I don't really like the look of a two story home on the backside. That being said, I really wanted big daylight windows in the basement. We went with large windows, but no walk out. We would have had to bring the grade up a bit more for a walk out and as it is, we will have to put in two retaining walls. I am not sure how much more expensive it was with the large windows, but I am sure it was more than smaller windows and the extra expense of the excavation. I thought about what we would be walking out to and that is a woodsy area on our 7 acres. It is nothing special and since most of our living space on the property is on the other side, it didn't seem to make sense to put the walk out in. We do have the large, two story look on the back side, but we have made that look shorter by siding choices. We put a cedar shake on the top section, then followed with straight siding. I am so super bummed I found this article! I wish we would have made our one-sided walk-in closet narrower as we ended up with a very small bedroom! We settled on 40" deep after reading this article the closet took valuable space away from the bedroom which is 10' x 11'. I would have done ANYTHING for an extra 5-6" which would have made the room 5' x 11.5" and the closet 36" deep which is plenty for a side-entry walk-in closet. We wanted to do walk in instead of reach in because of the flexibility of the bed configuration and gaining more wall space in the room. But we ended up with a small bedroom and a large closet. Don't make the same mistake we did!

That layout sounds kind of like what the 2 bedroom units in the HOA I lived in when we were still in SoCal was like...The vanity area of the bathroom had a closet facing the vanity/sink side that was the two sliding door type, with a door to the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom to the right (left if you're coming in the door from the master bedroom) and a door to the master bedroom on the left (right if you're coming in from the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom) - another double door slider closet was in the master bedroom. They almost always painted all of the walls, the closet doors, and the doors in/out of each space the same color as the master bedroom because it was adjoining. The smaller bedroom accessed the bathroom through another door off the upstairs hallway, so sometimes that smaller bedroom would be painted a different color but not always. White (the same one as was used elsewhere) was a popular and sensible choice, you can always add color with accessories and art! White bedding can start to look dingy if you don't wash it in hot water (occasionally adding bleach to go into the load while it's running), so think about how much 'maintenance' you're willing to do before buying all the bedding in white (sheets and pillowcases in white aren't as big of a deal because you typically have 'decorative' pillows and a comforter/duvet covering them when you get the bed made each day). :) When we had the house on the market the 'stager' had us buy one of those cheap bed-in-a-bag comforter/shams/decorative throw pillow sets in white with a little area of patterned print down at the part that goes on the foot of the bed, which I thought was totally impractical given that our dog loves being on the bed and washing the thing would have made the fiberfill migrate around so it would be lumpy when it went back on the bed! At least the place sold in less than a month after being listed so we didn't have to worry about it for very long. :P

I used to go over to Mom’s, and the caregiver would go for a long walk. Another would take a long shower. Another a nap, or surf the ’net, or take care of personal business.

My dear sister is in the throes of this & has been for several years. Is in a group home with wonderful carers, but is not doing well. Has not eaten for the past few days. My DH & I went out to see her today. It is very heartbreaking. She is 7 years older than me & has always been kind & thoughtful to me (and to many others!)..Told one of the carers a few days ago that she doesn't want to live. I don't want her to suffer...that's what I pray for. Cruel disease for sure.

My mom died on April 25th at the age of 94 of the ramifications of this horrible disease. She wasn't diagnosed until 85. She went into a marvellous memory care facility at 88 and was so well cared for. For all intents and purposes she died "at home" with her adopted family of caregivers for whom we will always be most grateful.

Agree that this is a great cause. like others here we have personal experience. My FIL had Dementia, not Alzheimer's but similar. We were blessed, although he rarely knew where he was, what decade he was in or even what happened 10 minutes ago, he remained kind and funny during his 6 year struggle. FIL was a guy that loved everyone and was loved by all before his dementia and during. He also lived in a care home with loving caregivers, Thankfully, my inlaws had enough money to pay for his care.

One of my dearest friends has Alzheimers. It has been so hard to watch her decline. Her husband adores her and takea good care of her. They moved to a lovely retirement community. They are in independent living but he hires a caregiver to help out so he can-get a break. Fortunately they have the means for the best care and the community has a memory care section when the time comes.

After my mother had in home caregivers for two years, I am flabbergasted that people without means can cope with this. Bless their hearts.

My heart goes out to all who are dealing with this horrible illness. I am a supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Such a cruel disease, and I pray for a cure.
