What brand of 36" liquid propane range is best for me?

I would like a professional type range with at least one burner that's very hot (18,000 btu or thereabouts) and one burner that will simmer. I'd also like an oven that's at least 4 cubic feet; a finish that's easy to clean, a price under $5000 and a solid record of needing few repairs. Does anyone have an idea of which range I should buy? There are so many and some have reviews I can't quite believe so I'm not sure which one would work best for me.

I can buy a 36" Bluestar for $5797 model number RCS366BV2. I guess I can afford that. It isn't top of Bluestar's line but do you think it's a reliable range? Why do you recommend Bluestar?

Paso, the internal debate I am having is BlueStar plus single wall oven vs. induction plus double wall oven! My leanings seem to change by the hour. I like that induction will keep my kitchen cooler, and will be safer as my 5 children learn to cook. I also don't want to always have to run the hood to eliminate the CO. And I want ease of cleaning. But.. a range is more romantic, I think my husband would like it better when he occasionally cooks breakfast, and induction may push me to needing another electrical panel in the house, which I think is a $2k expense. I probably need to consult an electrician about installation costs for the two different appliance configurations. Regardless, I'll probably go with my gut, but I want to know what expense I'm in for. Well, at least it's good to know LP will not affect the decision!

Too late- we're committed! Hopefully, the house is sufficiently energy efficient that it won't be a big deal. Third gas company was a no show and the fourth was hilarious. He quoted $4,500 for the tank and when I told him he was at least $1,000 higher than his competitors he suddenly discovered a "typo" on his price list and reduced it to $3,100. I asked what brand of tank it was and I was told that it's "proprietary" to which I responded- Well if we're buying a tank, THEN do we get to find out? He very seriously told me at that point I'd be able to read the manufacturer off the side of the tank. These people crack me up. One more quote on Monday and I am putting this issue to bed. Someone today actually quoted $1.61/ gal which sounds pretty darn good to me! Thanks for all the feedback- keep it coming, please!

I just ordered a 30" Bluestar rangetop and am doing the same search for a hood. One thing to note is that if you have a 36" rangetop, you might want to consider a 42" hood, rather than a 36" hood. The extra width does not add much to the cost of the hood (usually) and will improve your ability to capture grease, heat, etc. Although I haven't bought it yet, I've pretty much settled on the Kobe that Deeageaux identified above. I haven't found anything with similar specs that is in the same price range. The Kobe also gets good reviews on gardenweb. What Wolf model can you get for $2000? I have looked at most of the major brands and it is very difficult to find a hood with sufficient power for $2000. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I'm wondering if we are comparing apples to apples.

I've had LP Bluestar for over ten years and am very happy. Would buy again in a heartbeat - but consider a 48" with grill instead of the 36" I have. Just because. We also heat/hot water (compact high-efficiency boiler), and clothes-dry with LP just fine. The only thing I would advise if you haven't already is to give induction the once-over. I would never do traditional electric but induction is top-notch for cooking. I prefer the visceral experience and visual control of gas cooking, but induction is superior in many ways. - Steve

Since you're flexible consider a 36" Electrolux or Bosch induction range. Lots of benefits from simple to clean to doesn't generate waste heat into your room. Fast and powerful. Requires less exhaust fan capacity and less makeup air. It'll cost you less to run than propane in my area.

Bluestar is simple, with no electronics, and easy to DIY any maintenance, like igniters. Induction is great, but it is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum for electronics, and potential future issues with aging electronics.

We had a BlueStar with VentAHood. It was exactly what my husband wanted. Easy enough to keep clean with the open burners. There was a tray underneath that slides out and we'd cover it with foil for further ease of cleaning. It took a couple of visits from a technician after install to get the burners adjusted correctly but once they were, it performed as expected. However, the oven took two forevers to preheat. We ended up getting a countertop Breville smart oven and used that 95% of the time.

If/when we do another kitchen, if we still think we need a 36" range, I'll do a separate wall oven, or just stick with a 30" range. (We really liked the GE Cafe 6 burner with two ovens that we put in the next house. Used the small upper oven most of the time.)

From CR's subscriber 2020, 2021, and 2022 surveys: BlueStar ranges were dead last (1/5) in predicted reliability. If you're willing to forgo "pro-style" appearance, the 30" top-rated LG LSGL6335 has a 20K burner (natural gas), is well-like by owners (Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes) and costs $1400.
