Liquid propane ranges - any tips or brands to look into?

We are building a home in the Catskill region on NY where liquid propane is the only option other than electric. I am looking at stand alone ranges in the 48' size. In my preliminary research I feel like I am going to explore more options from Thermidor, Blue Star and possibly DCS. Does anyone have experience with any of these brands? If so, would you have any tips/recs for further research? The range will be used by people that really cook so it will get used heavily.

No special magic for propane, you just specify when ordering and the factory changes the orifices.

Wolf, Capital, Monogram, Electrolux also make 48" ranges.

Are you , or your cooks, looking for an all gas range or one that has gas burners and an electric oven ?

Thanks for the reply. We are going with just gas (no duel fuel) and are now between Thermador & Viking.

I have a Heartland stove 9200 that is about 26 yrs old. Bought it for the look. No problems for 19 yrs. Then the burner knobs started getting difficult to turn. Paid for appliance repair to come out but they were unable to repair. Situation worsened, called Aga Marvel and bought some repair parts. They never supported my efforts. Called Thompson Appliance in Tacoma, Wa. My experience with them leads me to to say never call them. The stove new was almost $5,00. delivered and installed. Thompson came out said I needed to have it taken into the shop, polished up and rehauled. They reportedly went to a recent seminar on the stove at Aga Marvel. I paid 2,500 with the parts and after a few months, same problem. They are a dishonorable team of father and son (son being the worst). I lived with one working burner for about 2 yrs. until I found an excellent repair person on Vashon Is, Wa. Issue with these burners: careful to not get water spilled down into the burners. Rust develops. I believe that was the only problem. Heartland was bought out by Aga Marvel and now have some stove parts but phasing out. Good luck.

Paso, the internal debate I am having is BlueStar plus single wall oven vs. induction plus double wall oven! My leanings seem to change by the hour. I like that induction will keep my kitchen cooler, and will be safer as my 5 children learn to cook. I also don't want to always have to run the hood to eliminate the CO. And I want ease of cleaning. But.. a range is more romantic, I think my husband would like it better when he occasionally cooks breakfast, and induction may push me to needing another electrical panel in the house, which I think is a $2k expense. I probably need to consult an electrician about installation costs for the two different appliance configurations. Regardless, I'll probably go with my gut, but I want to know what expense I'm in for. Well, at least it's good to know LP will not affect the decision!

Too late- we're committed! Hopefully, the house is sufficiently energy efficient that it won't be a big deal. Third gas company was a no show and the fourth was hilarious. He quoted $4,500 for the tank and when I told him he was at least $1,000 higher than his competitors he suddenly discovered a "typo" on his price list and reduced it to $3,100. I asked what brand of tank it was and I was told that it's "proprietary" to which I responded- Well if we're buying a tank, THEN do we get to find out? He very seriously told me at that point I'd be able to read the manufacturer off the side of the tank. These people crack me up. One more quote on Monday and I am putting this issue to bed. Someone today actually quoted $1.61/ gal which sounds pretty darn good to me! Thanks for all the feedback- keep it coming, please!

No, I saw it, too (they send a hinge pin with the range to use if/when you remove the door). So far I've just wiped down the grates with a damp sponge (scrubbed some spilled food spots with the scrubby side of the sponge), but that's about it as far as the grates go. In addition to the Goo Gone I'd suggested above, I've found what works really well on the burner pans (black enamel) for spraying and wiping, not for the burnt-on stuff, is the SCI Clean Encounters granite cleaning spray. I had it out to clean the counters one day, and decided to try it on the range top since it needed to be cleaned too, and it did a great job. I gave it a few spritzes, and wiped/buffed dry with the same microfiber that I'd used on the counters. No streaking, and the enamel looked really nice afterwards. I used the same damp microfiber to wipe down the SS after that, and it even did a good job there as well. I'll look for the Dawn Power Dissolver for stubborn spots. It's probably good to have on hand.

Thank you xedos. I am leaning towards Thermador but just want to be sure on this before we go ahead and make such a large purchase. Any experience with Thermador?

I've had LP Bluestar for over ten years and am very happy. Would buy again in a heartbeat - but consider a 48" with grill instead of the 36" I have. Just because. We also heat/hot water (compact high-efficiency boiler), and clothes-dry with LP just fine.

The only thing I would advise if you haven't already is to give induction the once-over. I would never do traditional electric but induction is top-notch for cooking. I prefer the visceral experience and visual control of gas cooking, but induction is superior in many ways.

Hi Steve, I have used induction in the past but we have decided on going LP. I looked into Blue Star but the closest licensed repair person is over 75 miles away, so had to rule that out. Am leaning towards Thermador because the package deals they are offering now including the dishwasher, etc.. is intriguing to me especially since they are owned by Bosch and I really like their dishwashers.

Interesting you say you have LP for your dryer - our contractor has advised getting an electric dryer. Need to ask him why that is the case.

Wow - the induction fans say that no one ever goes back to gas. Glad to see I'm not crazy for sticking with LP - thanks. I just wanted to make sure you at least considered it.

We've had no issues at all with the gas dryer or the gas furnace/hot water. You get better rates on the LP when you use it in volume for 'whole house' but you should probably run the numbers based on the efficiency of the machines and calculate the cost over time. We were just used to gas (LNG) driers and went with LP out of habit - nothing more complicated than that.

Induction is a whole different way of cooking - of course my pots & pans are not compatible so I cannot warrant getting a whole new set of cookware on top of a new range!! My cookware is 10 years old but looks brand new - very sturdy Calphalon pieces!
