Question: Boule De Neige
Comments (11)Like many OGR it is a sight to behold in the first flush - like yours - when it litteraly exhausts itself under the weight of all those flower. In my experience BDN is one of those "lanky" akward growers - responding to pruning - by producing what I call broomsticks - canes that produce laterals at the top of the canes. When the canes bend down - during the first amazing flush, the canes respond to the "Pegging" by producing laterals on top of the canes. This makes the canes more top heavy. The best solution I have seen to fix this problem - is using a solid stake and loops of neutralcolored strings or yarn at different heights holding the canes in the desired position, when it flowers - not allowing the canes to bend over as much, but only to spray out half as much. In a way it is like giving the rose - orthodentic braces - metaphorically speaking. This I how I see it done at most royal castles and rosariums here in Europe. I got down on my knees and looked up in the perfect canopy of leaves and flowers - saw the stake(s) and the string loops and asking the gardeners. The secret to selfsupporting big old garden roses, that didn't flop over was no longer a secret and I have used it on many roses since. This summer I will remember to take some pictures of the stake/loops when I visit the Royal Castles....See MoreBoule de Neige - Bourbon Rose
Comments (17)I grew 'Boule de Neige' the Bourbon of that name, It is one of my favorite white Roses, and I love how the red buds contrast against the fully open white blooms. I adore its' scent which although I would rate as light in strength ,a 4 out of 10, but wonderful in quality, a rose I will sniff every time I see it, it has several scent notes to me, mixed floral, a touch of Damask type rose scent, and a note of cold cream, that is often found in much older white roses. I'm from the North originally, and snow has endearing qualities to me, which is why I've chosen to take most of my vacations in the North; Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Finland, Denmark, Alaska and Canada, far more often than India and Mexico, I like temperatures in the 60's and 70's F. best. I find the rose name "snow ball" or "ball of snow" to be quite charming in itself, especially as it blooms in summer when there is no snow on the ground; a white rose that stirs up memories of sledding, caroling, and seeing miles upon miles of pristine snow on a winter night, and falling down on forests of fir and spruce. The chill of snowflakes against my cheek, being indoors on a cold winter night with a wood fire burning and all the world in black of night, contrasting with silver- white sheen of snow, mirrored in stars above. The winter nights are silent, surrounded by snow, and that is a blessing for contemplation. It is an evocative name; 'Boule de Neige' One rose can mean the world to a person, whichever rose it was, the lady was in love with it, that seems for sure. Lux...See MoreBoule de Neige Mature Size
Comments (15)I do love myrtus communis! I just used several of the compact variety to form accents in a border, have used one of the variegated compacts in a mixed border, and have a regular Myrtus Communis near the Kitchen Garden. I love the summer flowers and fall berries for seasonal interest and culinary use. However I try to branch out with each addition to the garden, so this ideally will be a somewhat distinct feature as regards flora, yet still homogenous aesthetically. The problem with most big box stores is they really only carry Buxus Microphylla or Buxus Sinica which will take much more regular pruning than my mother would like. They don't even really seem to carry dwarf cultivars of Japanese or Korean Boxwood, let alone English. Perhaps we'll end up using Teucrium x Lucidrys, but It'll be some time before we settle on anything in particular. Jay...See MoreAfter 4 years of trying, finally got my Boule de Neige
Comments (19)Dinglehopp, I strongly suggest you email Pamela. Like I said, I don't remember now how I came up with her name, but she didn't have a Boule de Neige listed as being available. I just asked--do you by any chance have one? She answered that she had a small one going and thought she could send it to me in the later fall (I was writing in the early fall). I explained that in Kansas, we waited until spring to plant our new roses, and she wrote back that was even better and she could promise a good-sized one for sure for April. So that was all arranged through our emails--it was not part of a regular online order. Good luck! Kate...See Morefig_insanity Z7b E TN
