Need Mantle Inspiration

I hate our current fireplace/mantle. A future goal is to change the fireplace altogether, but for now, given what we have....can you please help me with what to put on top?

I would remove the mirror and replace with art of similar or smaller size. The mirror is just reflecting a light and railing which is distracting.

If interested, it needs quite a few updates, as just accessorizing the mantle won’t have much impact. Painting the tile and mantle is not hard and you may find less of a need to replace fireplace entirely.

I did mine and it made a huge difference.

Then search on line for an overall look/combination you like, as your items are not connecting, either proportionality or style wise.

If only interested in the accessories, what you choose is personal, but the articles will help with balance, etc. and suggest a traditional look due to the sconses.

sidney - The mirror is 32" and to be honest I haven't even put it up there to check the size yet. I love it so much, I'm going to use it even if a bigger size would be a little bit better. As you can see, I have a large area above my fireplace too. I just saw a picture somewhere and I can't remember where now, but it had three exact mirrors that were framed above the fireplace. It reminds me a little of your inspiration picture. I'll have to retrace some of my steps and see if I can remember where I saw it. Laurie

Something I did in my guest bedroom while waiting for the perfect pieces of art was to get a photo calendar with pictures I like and buy some simple black frames. I had a set of four, looked pretty good. The one I had was Japanese watercolor art. Later, I bought two large beach watercolors. I love the beach and I found having beach pictures in the bedroom very relaxing! I like landscapes, but if you don't, then by all means don't. I had some landscapes in my bedroom, but moody ones. One was a cabin glowing with firelight covered by a huge amount of snow illuminated pink by a sunset. Just the perfect spot I would have liked to be and since the snow made it impossible to get in or out of the place, it just evoked peace and relaxation or me. To a Floridian it might have been a living nightmare, lol. Later it was a little homestead cabin on top of a hill, a woodcut. When I went full on beach in one room, I had the typical tropical desert island scene, which also says relax, no interruptions. Landscapes can be very abstract too, my friend's daughter does very abstract landscapes. I'm not trying to sell her stuff, just including a link because I think she does beautiful work and it's a good example of "out of the box" landscapes. Any reason why you would not want a glass door. Glass doors are specifically made for wood burning. Main reason being that when you burn a fire you normally leave the damper open all night as the fire dies out. With glass doors, you can close them when the fire is dying out and leave the damper open, so you don't get all that cold air coming into the home at night. Glass doors will normally have mesh curtains or backup wire mesh doors behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open. Some glass doors can also be burned with the doors closed. Not that other types of screens might be appropriate, I am more curious why you think glass doors would not be good for wood burning.

It would be easier to make recommendations if we saw the fireplace in the context of the room. We don't know how far the wall of the fireplace extends up and that will have some bearing on how large the art or mirror should be.

If you use a mirror I'd consider one with antique glass to obscure the image reflected. Looks like the ceiling light is too small for your room also.

I can see that the fireplace is on a wall all by itself.

By the reflection in the mirror, I can see you are a traditional style...

I would paint out that entire flat of wall up to the ceiling including the mantle and tile all the same color. either to match the room walls, or a deep rich color to accent SW Naval or a deep rich jewel tone you would like to highlight in other upholstery in the room.

remove the sconces and put plate covers over the electrical box(s)
