Help designing patio entry cover

Hi - We had this home built last summer. It is an ADU, a small mother-in-law house we built to care for my mom. Code said it had to be attached by a breezeway (where do they come up with this stuff?) so there's a breezeway, the mudroom roof and the main house roof all coming together. Now I need help from you Houzzers. There's not enough protection from rain and I want the grill covered. This door pictured enters into a mudroom, it's the main entry for my husband and me. What are some concepts you can come up with to have a cover here that ties in to the design of the house? Thanks! Lora

(That's the neighbors large house in the background. Also, the red fence will be painted dark gray.)

Sorry but who designed this ? Did you mention having a cover for the grill area? Where does the door beside the grill go? I think maybe you need to move the grill to somehwere else but I need a bteer idea of the outdoor space and how it relates to the interior of the house .

Like I said in the original, that door goes into a mudroom. I don't have a better option for the grill that I can figure -- I don't want it on the front of the house.

The lot coverage, including eaves and patio, were constrained by City codes.

Honestly? I think the gable adds nothing to the look of the house. In fact it doesn't go with the style of house. I would do as you have in the second plan but have the overhang just go straight across the front. Here's an idea of what I mean.

I am thinking that the space in front of the crotons that is partially covered by roof and is shielded from the street would be a great place to sit and read. You could put a chair and a foot stool and a side table and bring out a pitcher of ice tea and be set for the afternoon. Maybe something simple in wood, like cedar. Or an adirondack chair. I might even take a nap instead of read :)

IMO the patio seems too small to be useful . What do you want to use the space for ? Because the roof you will IMO need to go something flat for the cover. Do want complete cover to make it water tight or more like a pergola . First I would make it at least 2 x the size it in out from the house and wahy not just extend it to the edge of the house on the left. It does not appear to me to be done properly with the area with the concrete since I see not gravel at the edge , maybe I am not looking properly . What is under the concrete is what I am asking and how deep.

@3onthetree - I should have looked at the drawing closer before I posted my question! A few hours after posting, I looked a little closer - and realized that it was the T&G cedar boards for the ceiling. I meant to come back here to correct my initial post - but have been a little crazy the past few days. I have other notes/specs for the project - I just didn’t post them because I didn’t think anyone would want to read them. I do, however, have a few other Qs - so, I will post what was submitted to the city + add some photos later tonight. I truly appreciate any comments/advice you have after looking at the notes/photos (if you have time). Thanks! @Patricia Colwell - As I explaiined in my post, only a portion of the patio will be covered. The firepit is located on the other side of the patio + set away from the house. I should have added photos when I initially submitted my post - I will do so in a bit. @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK - rigging up a tarp is a great idea. I’ll see what I can do!

It’s a complicated setup and I can’t really tell what’s what. Is the ADU the structure on the right, rectangled in red? (Are there steps going up into it? 😳) Maybe a closer picture of that area would help us.

Why can’t the grill go where the purply stripe is?

One of those sunshades might work, but for me the BBQ has a lot of smoke and its already close to both houses, so if you cover that area I think you might get a lot of smoke build up. The sun shade might be a good option as it would still allow air flow. https://a.co/d/3U7BU1O

Move the grill to the other side of the breezeway closer to your fence, and put up a sunshade over it. I'd leave the front door as it is. Can't you just use the covered door when it's raining?
