Your room isn’t actually 19’ long because the bump out with the window can’t be counted as space to include a bed. What is the measurement of the bump out? Frankly, for a guest room , the bath and closet are adequate. There is only one wall for the bed and, as a guest, I would prefer a king bed and big nightstands or a table and nightstand, a dresser across from the bed. The drawers in the dresser would hold all the things I don’t hang as well as provide surface for a lamp and a tv.

IMO a guet bedroom does not need a walkin closet and IMO if you wan to have a closet just do a nice reachin one and save all the mess of redoing the space . Put a nice desk and chair in the alcove that is much more useable i a guest room than a walkin

The bump out looks to be enough for at least one comfy chair so I can tie my shoes or read a book on those off times when we are not sightseeing or visiting. A table with fresh flowers and a lamp would be welcome.

Why do you need a walk in closet for a guestroom?

The alcove is about 5' deep so this could fit a desk and chair OR a two small chair and table. The bedroom is then really 14'x14'. I'm hoping I could eat into it and accommodate a walk-in and larger bathroom. The reason I'm trying to create a walk-in is because I have 5 bedrooms upstairs and whoever built my house did not believe in any walk-in closets. The closets are fairly tiny.

P.D. Schlitz, thanks for the sketch, but I can't move the door. I have crown detailing in the ceiling that's all symmetric so I wouldn't be able to eat into the bedroom. Can I not simply expand the existing closet slightly into the bathroom and have both the bathroom and closet expand say 4' into the bedroom? That would leave me with a 10'x14' bedroom which is still a fair size. Can something like this work?

I don’t see why that plan couldn’t work, if that’s what you want to do and your contractor OKs the reorienting of your plumbing. I’m a person that likes a little more intimate bedroom (and hotel room) spaces, so I don’t see anything wrong with an 11 x 14 space plus reading alcove, etc.— but this would be on smaller side of an en suite which might be a resale consideration.

I’m guessing your bath is a standard 5’ x 8’? My proposal was to flip that on its axis, keeping a 5x8 but orienting it (and walk-in) vertically on the plan, which theoretically would eat up 3 feet from existing bedroom.

The ‘vestibule’ entry on my quick sketch was to give the room some more privacy from a public area, but it could allow you to also carve out a foyer closet there if desired (not shown on my sketch). But to your point, this is not necessary to achieve what you’re going for and potentially more $$ than it’s worth (but if crown molding is your only concern, that could likely be easily bypassed by having an arched doorway leading into ‘vestibule’ area).

FWIW- I’m a serial home renovator with a number of projects done for myself, friends and family— but I’m not a ‘pro’. Your project doesn’t seem overly complicated but you’ll want a knowledgeable contractor with some in-house design chops.

DH and I had a similar discussion when we were building a house 20 years ago. He had his heart set on a small pub type bar. I knew it wouldn’t fit, but none of my logical discussions swayed him. He was convinced the room was large enough to accommodate this feature while I was convinced it wouldn’t. I finally laid out the space in our garage floor and, using chalk, drew out the size of the bar he wanted. It was one quarter of the floor space we would have in our new house great room. He saw immediately how much we would give up to have the bar. I urge you to do the same in this bedroom. Use painter’s tape on the floor to show how your walk-in closet and bath extension will affect the room size. Will you still be able to fit a queen bed? Will there be room for two nightstands? Only you can weigh the cost of these renovations vs the useful space left in the guest room. This is only my opinion, but seldom do guests need a walk-in closet . A bigger bath would be nice, but my guests aren’t staying for several months, just a few days.
