Walk-In Closet: Accessible from bathroom or just bedroom?

The current layout has the walk-in closet in the master bedroom accessible both from the bedroom and from the bathroom. Our contractor thinks we should close up the entrance from the bathroom, arguing that we'll have more storage in the closet with that uninterrupted wall.

I kind of liked the idea of being able to get out of the shower and go right into the closet (there would be a door, it wouldn't just be a doorway)...especially if one of us is waking earlier than the other. But I can't decide which scenario makes sense. Any thoughts either way?

I like to get dressed in my walk-in closet off the bathroom. I have a chest of drawers in there. My lingerie chest is in my bathroom. I don't store clothes in my master bedroom. I have a round ottoman in my closet so I can sit down to put on jeans, shoes, etc.

I've built three homes with this plan; just renovated one with a master suite addition and again, put the walk-in closet off the bathroom. I have HVAC, so there's no issue with humidity. The bath has ventilation fans, per our building code.

Thanks for that! So do you have access from the bedroom as well or just from the bathroom? I'm wondering if I should close off access from the bedroom then?

our new build is incorporating a J&J for the kids also. Here's the space from our drawings I don't know how it translates to the space you have, but hopefully it helps. I wanted the kids to have the ability to go to the bathroom/brush their teeth/get ready if someone else was in the shower. Plus the privacy, etc. etc. We had the ability to accommodate two full baths, but found the extra cost to be unnecessary (it was a few thousand in extra plumbing, fixtures, materials). It also meant that each would be a smaller bathroom, versus a nice size J&J. I'm really happy with the decision so far!

My parents house is like that, but there’s a wall with a wide doorway into the area with the vanity, so it’s open but also easy to close off by just putting a curtain rail up. It’s also oriented to the room such that if you only use enough light at the vanity to wash your hands for a midnight potty run, it really isn’t enough to bother someone in the bed if you place the bed sensibly. Getting ready in the morning would be trickier if you needed to do makeup and so on so needed proper lighting, so that’s where a screen or a curtain would come in.

When you build with the WOW and 4k square feet, (which sounds like a lot but is not ) . It is NOT when you give starring role /NEARLY five hundred sq ft of it to a great room in front of the entry. Another couple hundred to a "hearth" area ......and what will happen here is nobody will actually gather in the great room, the fire will be the traffic stopper. Then you give each of three bedrooms a "walk in " closet. etc Result? you are left with the master suite that seems ( is) out of scale to the wow in the middle. Also small scale kid/guest bedrooms. The only answer to this plan is to lose a chunk of the "covered porch" square off the kitchen corner, bump the master suite to flush with the kitchen exterior wall.Change the window, to two on the covered porch wall and center the bed between. Plan to lose the tub for a decent shower too. Adjust bath and closet , center the entry to those with a right and left side for each. Anything else requires a total overhaul of the plan. That would mean a second story with two beds and baths on a second floor. ..........a completely different house. But this much under roof on one floor, with allocation to functions as is ? Yup......this is what you get Bump the master suite....or build something else.. ( square off that breakfast nook in any scenario.)

That layout sounds kind of like what the 2 bedroom units in the HOA I lived in when we were still in SoCal was like...The vanity area of the bathroom had a closet facing the vanity/sink side that was the two sliding door type, with a door to the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom to the right (left if you're coming in the door from the master bedroom) and a door to the master bedroom on the left (right if you're coming in from the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom) - another double door slider closet was in the master bedroom. They almost always painted all of the walls, the closet doors, and the doors in/out of each space the same color as the master bedroom because it was adjoining. The smaller bedroom accessed the bathroom through another door off the upstairs hallway, so sometimes that smaller bedroom would be painted a different color but not always. White (the same one as was used elsewhere) was a popular and sensible choice, you can always add color with accessories and art! White bedding can start to look dingy if you don't wash it in hot water (occasionally adding bleach to go into the load while it's running), so think about how much 'maintenance' you're willing to do before buying all the bedding in white (sheets and pillowcases in white aren't as big of a deal because you typically have 'decorative' pillows and a comforter/duvet covering them when you get the bed made each day). :) When we had the house on the market the 'stager' had us buy one of those cheap bed-in-a-bag comforter/shams/decorative throw pillow sets in white with a little area of patterned print down at the part that goes on the foot of the bed, which I thought was totally impractical given that our dog loves being on the bed and washing the thing would have made the fiberfill migrate around so it would be lumpy when it went back on the bed! At least the place sold in less than a month after being listed so we didn't have to worry about it for very long. :P

I have access to the closet only from Master bathroom and I like this setup. I like the idea of getting out of shower and going into the walk in closet to get dressed. Sure, there are times when I have to walk through the bathroom to access the closet, I don't have any issues with that.

When we moved, I was adamant about not having the closet accessed through the bathroom. Fast forward to the rental we were in for 9 months and that's just how it was, and I liked it a lot, for the same reasons as lakeviewgirl - convenience. There was never a moisture problem, I guess we had adequate bathroom ventilation. So, if it were me, I'd choose to close off the bedroom access and keep the bathroom access, and I wouldn't want to waste space with TWO doors, unless the closet is huge.

It's nice to be able to go to the closet right from the bathroom so that if your schedules are different, all the activity is in one area. I'd probably just do a door from the bathroom.

Never a problem at any house with the closet access from the bathroom. The toilet has never been close to the closet. Separate WC, too in 4 homes I've lived in (3 of those I had built). My current renovation, there is no separate WC, but the toilet is 20 feet away from the closet.

I have no closet access from the master bedroom because that would require 3 doors (entry, closet, bath) in the master.

If I needed to close up one of the two doors into the closet, I'd close up the door from the bedroom, not the access door to the closet from the bathroom. It's so convenient to not have to go back out into the bedroom to get to the closet.

Only close off the bedroom closet entrance if you'll be able to get into the closet while your spouse or partner is using the bathroom (showering, using the toilet.....).

Toilet will be closed off from rest of the bathroom (enclosed) :) OK so I'm leaning towards closing off bedroom entrance. Having two seems silly and it sounds like most of you like having access from the bathroom.

I wouldn't want clothes to be exposed to the humidity from the bathroom.

Years ago I had a closet that could be entered from the both the bath or the bedroom. Loved it and wish my current house were configured so I could remodel to create the same setup again.
