need help with stairs please !!!

Hi 👋 I need some design ideas . We are ripping out stairs and redoing it and laying down new pavers as well . Should we do it in brick ? The layout will stay the same or something else like neutrals stone . I don’t want to steer to much away from the brick on the house now. Pic of current stairs and pavers that will be placed . Looking for more contemporary look .

I think the sample pic you chose looks too grey with your tone of brick. (Not sure if you were posting an exact color or just inspiration for the typle of stone.)

Our situation was a bit different but hopefully I can offer suggestions based on our situation. Local building code required steps onto the lawn from the house for an occupancy permit. They're concrete and we built over them with what you see in the link. Our specific concerns were safety while transporting items in/out of the house. And we had an elderly relative for whom stairs were dangerous. So, we built an Egress Porch (really a small deck) over the existing steps, level with the threshold. This provides secure footing while opening the door. Then we choose landing style steps for easily providing assistance to someone in need. If you were to consider a small deck it would provide the security at your door like I mentioned, leave the weep holes open and could still become the 1st step. Other steps could be pavers on concrete to match the patio. Hopefully your patio could be enlarged a few square feet to recover the space necessary for the steps. Hope this helps. Pal, can you explain or show me a picture of what you mean by a pierced stone riser? I'm not following...but I very much value your opinion on this! Joaniepoanie, you're probably right that I should start there. There could be a significant difference in price that'll tip the scales one way or the other. Although if one or the other is a clearly better choice, I'd be willing to pay more for it if it makes the most sense.

I'll stay out of the 'sand vs replace' arguments above. On to the original question. You will want to MATCH the TREADS to the main floor. The risers can be painted (see photo above) or matched as in your photo. Either way, the TREADS need to match the main floor. What happens on the UPPER level is considered 'private'. I'm guessing those areas contain bedrooms. That means those areas are only for private members of the house hold. The main flooring/stair case are PUBLIC areas. That means guests will see those areas. You want the public areas to be harmonious. Having a different hardwood on the second story isn't a crime. It happens all the time. Totally acceptable....with the caveat that the stairs get dealt with properly. So....match the treads to the new floor (do NOT do a gel stain!!!!!). Have them capped or sanded and stained to match the new floor. If you want you are welcome to paint the risers white. It would work very well because of your white spindles. And stain the banister the same colour as the floor. And if the original hardwoods are SOLID hardwood, then think twice about ripping them up. They are worth a considerable amount of money. You would be ending their life as a "teenager" instead of an octogenarian. Solid hardwood floors have the same lifespan as humans = 80-100 years.

Can you post another photo in better lighting? the photo is blurred and so dark we can't see the any of the colours properly to make any comment.

In my opinion something grey like concrete pavers or rugged look grey stone tiles would be a good option. It will go well with the surrounding urban landscape too and not look out of place.

Below I show the Stone Ridge Oceanic Blue you're considering for your stairs and back yard. I suggest your paint all doors white as well as the trim on the house and new wood railing that will match your window frames. I don't have any dimensions but if you are able to place the stairs facing the patio it would make the area more inviting and you'd be able to place your BBQ against the brick wall and have a large area for your dining table and chairs.

Consider making the stair landing wide enough that you can put a narrow table or bench (minimum 12") at the side. When you 're taking food and dishes up the stairs, it's so convenient to put things down for a moment to open the door. Or for the indoor cook to put a few things down on the bench, and the outdoor cook (or helper) comes up the stairs and gets them. We have a bench just outside our kitchen door and it's used all the time.

I much prefer the look of the front-facing stairs.
