Feedback on Induction Cooktops w/ Knobs
Comments (36)I had the Gaggenau ci491 installed about 2 weeks ago. So far my family has no problem using it, including my 10 year-old. While some of the controls are touch related, the power setting for each hob are adjusted with the knob, & the entire cooktop can be turned off by removing the knob. It works well for us and is an improvement over the buggy touch control unit that it replaced, in my opinion. I found there was a paucity of information on this model, so to try to help others evaluate it _before_ purchasing it I posted a 12 minute instructional video on YouTube. Disclaimer: Use the video at your own risk. I am not affiliated with Gaggenau and make no binding representations related to this product. Here's the link on YouTube. http://youtu.be/0yqROURkzUM This cooktop runs a bit small. Though I got the model with the trim to try to cover up a the hole in the counter from the prior cooktop, it wasn't _quite_ big enough. Therefore, I've had to order a custom trim piece made. For those of you that need a maker the one I've ordered from is Micro-Trim, Inc. (www.microtrim.com), in California. Manufacture and shipping across country for about $180. I feel like I should've paid 1/2 that, but couldn't spend lots of time shopping around. I'll post a picture with the trim installed after it's done. The above referenced video was shot before the trim arrived. As to reliability, I won't be able to gauge that for some time. Thanks again to Moebus, GWlolo & Rentaltux for helpful comments. Comments (4)Sorry weedmeister, I guess I forgot to check off that I wanted any responses sent to my e-mail, so all this time I thought no one had responded to me. Our 36" height counter will have granite installed on it. The cabinet to install/surround the 30" wall oven would be 33" width. Thanks for clarifying that the 4 1/2" toekick area was a maximum and not a minimum. My builder tells me that he thinks he could make it work, but it will definitely be only a couple inches off the ground. The alternative is to change the kitchen design and put the oven to the left of the cooktop where my 33" wide drawer base was going and move the drawers under the cooktop instead. (I'll lose one drawer and they would now be only 30"). Not sure of this compromise and not sure if the oven will look weird sitting to the left of the cooktop, though it may be easier to put things into the oven directly from the cooktop with this configuration. I'm still plugging away, but at this point my builder is at a standstill until appliances are picked so electrician can come in. Any other thoughts appreciated....See MoreExperience flush mounting Meile induction cooktop in quartz countertop
Comments (3)Yes, I have first hand experience doing this for a couple different clients. My advice would be not to flush mount it. Couple of reasons for this: -To flush mount, your fabricator will have to route the counter-top to the exact size of the Miele cooktop frame. For some fabricators, this is outside their abilities and can result in a rough cut and force you to buy another slab of quartz. -For the fabricators that can do this, depending upon his skill level, this will leave a 1/16-1/8" gap around all sides, perfect place for food and grease to get caught in, and getting it cleaned becomes very difficult indeed. -Another downside is that down the road, when Miele discontinues that cooktop (and this is inevitable), while they will certainly offer another cooktop of the same size, the actual frame and housing is highly unlikely to line up with your already routed counter-top, leading to difficult and expensive options should the cooktop need replacing. For these reasons, I find the risk of headaches far outweighs the aesthetic reward. The good news is that Miele's cooktops have some of the slimmest profiles on the market, such that even when installed normally, they look quite sleek indeed. Comments (7)DoT 5 silicone brake fluid may soften the cured silicone. There are so many silicones that I hesitate to use any term stronger than "may." It is possible that the gleaner of all chemical inventions, Loctite, may offer a deliberate solution. Ethyl alcohol is only good for removal when the silicone is still wet. Edit: I also found this after a search. https://onlinesupply.net/Shop-Janitorial/Adhesives/REMOV-8?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqaOEhbfK_wIVhbjICh0caQ32EAQYAiABEgJTj_D_BwE.
