crooked baby trees - how to fix
Comments (29)Regarding the "upside-down" electrical outlets: It has nothing to do with being a 15- or 20-amp outlet. There was a time when nearly every picture frame in the US was hung with a metal wire strung across the back of the frame, and this wire was then draped across a nail or screw in the wall, oftimes above an outlet (because outlet boxes are mounted to wall studs, and studs are also the best place to anchor a nail for hanging pictures). In the incidence of a fallen picture frame, the frame would hit the electrical plug, loosening it enough for the wire to bridge across the 2 prongs of the power cord, creating a fire hazard (homes have been lost to such disasters). Since the 1970's most electrical appliances beyond a certain amperage rating are required to have a 3-prong plug... the 3rd prong is carrying the "ground" for safety of the circuit. The 3rd hole in the outlet receives this ground prong. The electrical code in many states requires that the ground hole be positioned upward to eliminate the aforementioned fire hazard. Even if code does not require it, positioning the outlet with the ground upward is the safest practice. As humans we tend to subconsciously anthropomorphize things in our life, so the 2-slots-for-eyes-and-a-hole-for-a-nose image has it's way. The electrician who replaced your outlets was not errant, they were looking out for your safety. Regarding bent seedlings: Trees have an amazingly resilient and reactive physiology, and it is possible to straighten such defects by securing the apical dominant stem of the seedling to a small-diameter wooden rod using ribbon-type cordage such as arbor tie (typically used for staking older trees). Secure the main stem directly to the rod at strategic points to hold the stem straight parallel to the rod. Yes, the bark inside of the bend will be under tension and the bark outside will be under compression, but in time those stresses will normalize as the tree adds xylem/phloem material during regular growth. The smaller the seedling diameter, the greater the success of straightening, just remember to loosen and re-tie the flat cordage seasonally to avoid strangling the tree as it gains girth....See MoreNew house on our street sitting crooked
Comments (58)just had to copy & paste these statements: "The whole enclave is ostentatiously poorly designed. Very depressing. It's just another example of where a random collection of bumpouts, gables, and disconnected rooflines on postage stamps approved by a committee are considered to be "upscale" because so much money has been spent on that bad design. " The whole development appears to be crammed into undersized lots to maximize builder profit on th eland investment. this is an interesting statement from the OP, so I will go ahead and quote it: "....complaining about issues that can't be changed is childish" How is this different then complaining about this house? In fact, if all houses were for sale, theirs would be the FIRST I would buy. Y'all are reading my mind...its uncanny! I really hate threads with folks talking smack about the neighbor's tacky house..one person's tacky house is another's dream home... best of luck OP....See MoreHow to account for natural light in figuring number of lights needed
Comments (2)Consider the natural light as a bonus. Plan your lighting for evening. night and overcast conditions when there is insufficient natural light. Zone your lighting and use dimmers so you can create varied levels of intensity adding depth and interest. Recessed ceiling lighting, under-cabinet task lighting, island pendants and over table pendant/chandelier. We often place one or two lights over the main sink for additional task lighting....See MoreCrooked backsplash
Comments (19)"the backsplash will not be level because the ceiling is not level." Unless the backsplash is installed parallel to the horizon (ie, "level") rather than parallel to the ceiling. In that case you will have an uneven course of tile at some point, because it will have to be tapered to remain level. If this is still an issue, I think your best option is to forego the tile above the window. That is what is causing the out-of-level to be more obvious. The counter, upper cabs, and window should all be level (ie parallel to the horizon) and plumb (ie perpendicular to the horizon) and therefore they can be used as the guides for a level backsplash. The ceiling (or floor, if that comes up) is irrelevant because the cabs, counters, uppers, and window should be level, *not parallel to the ceiling*. What a terrible situation, hope you can get your BF on this guy's a**....See MoreLyn Nielson
