Paint Design Dilemma

curb appeal help! front door color etc

last year

What can I do to make the front of our standard colonial house more interesting? I was thinking to paint the front door- but what color ? Location is Northern Virginia. The siding is white and shutters are maroon. Roof is gray. What else can be done with landscaping to make it look better ?

Paint all the shutters black and the front door. replace the side lights with something more coach stlyle and longer. if the budget allows replace the garage door with no windows or windows at top add black hardware. Extend the planter beds to the end of the sidewalk and tier the plantings.

I would work on the landscaping. add bigger lights on the sides of the door, i would do brass to match the colonial style. they dont need to be huge, but to scale for your house size. For door color, i would match the shutters or paint the shutters black and do the door in a different color. Also do you face south? if so, i would consider removing the storm door in warm virginia. i had to do that - it was baking and warping my door.

When you can't see the entrance proper, you need to create another entrance that is obvious and which will lead to the hidden entrance. The garage entrance (since that is where one must go) must be dolled up in some way, making it seem inviting. Architectural embellishment is one possibility. The garbage cans stationed at the right side do not help make the entrance seem inviting. They say that this is "where the help enters" ... not the public! The layout of the white gravel mulch is not helpful either. Since gravel is commonly used as paving material, it seems like it is a path that leads to the darkened central area of the house, behind the yellow flowering tree. If it's not the entrance, it's confusing. A different bed line could make it more clear that that is not the case. Here are a couple of possibilities that suggest a direction. I prefer the second bed line and obscuring the central (darkened) area with plantings, though it would require more renovations of the planting.The blank wall of the house warrants more than a single palm trunk in front of it as a method of adding interest. A fan spray of trunks might be better.

so I have been staring at front doors all night, and one thing I found that I wanted to bounce off the brain trust here was that I think I like the look of the overall entryway being wider. There is a glimpse of that effect in the renderings above due to the addition of sidelights...but I think that the simplicity of not having sidelights, and instead getting width from a double front entry door has a pleasing look that while enhancing the curb appeal, still looks simple and understated (and in doing so blends with the house). here was one I tried to photoshop onto our house...let me know what you think. I didnt go out of my way to pick that door color, it was just a nice looking (and simpleish) double front door with white trim and a basic (but wider than my current) step so I gave it a shot... If anyone is up for some photoshopping, I am curious how a double front door setup like this would look with a gray door (similar to the single color maybe?) or a red/orange door like in the prior photos... If we go this route I will have to see if phantom screens work on a double opening :) appreciate the landscaping you have added into your renderings as well, and I definitely want to remove/replace what we have now...but we are a less is more kind of family I think when it comes to maintaining landscaping so I can't imagine installing (or keeping up with) that impressive spread you have in your picture celerygirl. Yardvark's suggestion is probalby more our speed..

Snap a photo on a sunny day then use the Sherwin Williams ColorSnap app to play with the colors. I would select a tone slightly darker than your mortar for the garage door and a color slightly darker than your darkest brick for the front door. I would then on the garage door install magnetic faux hinges and windows; this will add detail to the door, like the below house. I know they can be found on Amazon, not sure where else. VV N there's quite a few things you can do to bring more of a mid century vibe to your house. you can start by looking up mcm ranch homes redo's. or mid century brick ranch upgrades. something along those lines. you have such a huge front yard, do something interesting w/it I like how these utilized short fences to give some dimension to the yard notice the garage door on this one too. start look at pictures of other garage door styles on these homes. Look at the large cement paver squares. you can DIY these you can't even see your front door. make a pathway to it and get rid those large bushes any of these color combos will work w/your existing brick. (if you want to paint the brick, let me know, otherwise, these will work) replace 'shutters' for the wood portion

I'd also paint the shutters black. An updated landscape would do wonders for your house - think colors, textures, varying heights, curvy lines - and bring the plantings out a good distance from the foundation.

It's a lovely house, just needs a bit of fresh ideas to make it more interesting. Of course landscaping is a big part to give it more curb appeal. I also suggest replacing the front and garage doors (greige), large black sconces, and a nice font for the street numbers above the garage door

And adding a nice portico would also be a nice touch adding some volume to the front of the house...

Love, love, love light color shutters even better than the black. With new sconces, a new traditional door and landscaping, I bet you'll have one of the most attractive houses on your street!

Sorry I really don't like the appearance of those maroon shutters. If you click in the pic below you'll see that these shutters are deep, dark navy. So dark they are almost black. I would select this color for your home.

I also like the white on white shutter and wall combination but IMO it looks better with brick than siding.

Yes, select some new, larger wall lights for your door.
