Help - Dryer not hot! Wet clothes! School tomorrow!
Comments (4)Did you accidently set the dryer on fluff or air only? You can always hang your clothing on hangers and they will dry overnight, or use drying racks as a temporary measure to get you by. They don't cost all that much at Wal-Mart. I never use the dryer and air dry all our clothing in the basement on lines and drying racks; and clothes that normally get hung on a hanger are placed on hangers and hung on a clothes rod in the basement. We have a ceiling fan to aid drying, so stick a fan on your clothes to speed the drying. My MIL never owned a dryer and had 8 kids. All four boys played sports at the same time, back when you washed the uniforms and workout clothes at home. I still wonder how she did it with a couple drying racks next to the floor furnace when she couldn't dry things outside. She was like a kid with a new toy when we gave her our old dryer when we got a new set. -Grainlady...See Moreloved my kenmore 28 years never service but now have to buy new
Comments (7)Sometimes these yesterday to today complaints about appliances seem a bit like apples to oranges comparisons to me. I just retired a 25 year old Admiral washer and dryer, I only used them for a few months but if they were like anything else in the unit they had never seen a lick of maintenance. I have a very basic compact set from Samsung now and they do a lot of things the old set didn't while using less water, power and detergent to provide me with much cleaner clothes. They are stackable (goodbye support frame), with stainless drums and I don't have to wheel the washer forward to open it and hold the lid to load it(imagine how great that unsecured washer sounded to my downstairs neighbour when spinning - I don't have to because someone upstairs above me still has one) nor does the dryer door open into the doorway anymore. Will they last 25 years? Not a chance but if I get 5-7 with relatively few problems I will be very happy. Better 5-7 with all those features than 25 without them - if I am trading those fairly simple features for longevity then I'm Ok with that - would I prefer to have my cake and eat it to - sure who wouldn't. Kenmore doesn't manufacture anything - Sears pays other companies to make Kenmore products. Often these are just re-badged versions of the manufacturers own product or sometimes they re-configured with features added or subtracted from the manufacturers version. With washer and dryers I think LG might be doing a lot of the Kenmore front loaders but I'm not sure. This may not be true in your market but in Canada Sears charges more for other brands than their competitors for regular price and doesn't have as good regular markdowns. You can probably get a Samsung pair cheaper somewhere else. Sears tends to offer deeper markdowns on Kenmore products generally anyway. Kenmore is as good as the similar manufacturers model - which often is quite good so no reason not to consider them....See MoreA/C failed - clogged with clothes dryer lint
Comments (16)Ok, I really do doubt that lint is the cause of the failures, unless the unit was really plugged up by the lint. Ask the diagnosing tech what the head pressure was when he thought the coils were plugged up, and what the outdoor ambient temp was, if he doesn't know then get another tech. Pressure and temperature measurements are the only way to properly diagnose refrigerant related problems, including plugged coils. I would suspect that the first compressor that burned out contaminated the sealed refrigeration system with acids. Here is what happens, when a sealed compressor motor burns out the internal windings overheat and burn off the varish, in the presence of refrigerant, oil, and heat very strong acids are formed. When the compressor gets changed out the acid eats away at the varnish that coats the motor windings of the new compressor. Back in the old days R-11 was used to flush a system out that had burned out a compressor to remove the acids. Today environmental laws prohibit that practice. Here is what should be done to prevent future burn-outs. A removeable suction filter dryer that is made just for system burnouts should be installed just before the compressor. The system should be allowed to run for week under normal use, then the tech comes back and changes the suction filter. A month later another change occurs, and at three months an acid test is done on the oil to assure that all acid has been removed. At this point if all the acid is gone either another suction filter is put on, or the pipe is spliced back together with flare fittings leaving the filter out entirely. Unless a proper burnout cleanup is made you will continue to be replacing compressors on a frequent basis. Most compressors can live 10 years or more if they are installed correctly in a system that is not contaminated with acids from previous burnouts....See MoreKerosene smell in clothes dryer - mystery solved!
Comments (27)Thank you for this post! I couldn't figure out why my clothes smellled like butane . I wasn't sure if my dryer was going bad, if the dryer ventilation was clogged (even though my ventilation dryer pipes were recently installed) or if I had a gas leak. We can't live without a dryer and yet, I was mostly concerned with safety. After reading this post, I realized that my floors were sanded and stained the day (and day after) I ran my dryer. I would have never attributed that terrible smell to the floor chemicals seeping into my dryer without these posts! Its been a few days now and clothes are drying and smelling great. Hope the butane smell washes out of those 2 chemical loads....See MoreDLM2000-GW
