Board & Batten in entryway- help

last year

I am planning to install board & batten in my entryway- something similar to the attached photo. I’d like to go up about 3/4 of the way to the top of the front door. My question- what would you do with that wood ledge? Leave it and continue on above it? Or do this section lower? Paint it the same color as the board & batten or Leave it as is (it was the same color as the railing on the floor below it)? Thanks

Did you intend to give us a photo of your own entryway? I don’t see one. I only see 3 inspiration pictures.

If you are asking for comments simply on the inspiration pictures, here’s mine: the first picture looks very dark and tunnel-ish. The narrow hallway is made look worse by the very dark and very tall board and batten.

My house is board and batten, but it's a modern, spare, Northwest design. The photo you provided shows a very nice, traditional, almost Southwest style, and I think you would be detracting from the look to use a board and batten approach with what you have. This, in my opinion, would be one of those cases where more is less. Be happy with what you have and don't try to "improve" it.

Not only call the company but ask them to send full size sample in a color you are considering - they did that for us with vinyl shake. You need hands on a product to see if it's what you want and since you are opting for a wider width you want to make sure it has some heft to it and won't get wonky/wavy on you after install.

shead- The horizontal trim piece is likely there to conceal a seam since I believe Hardie panel comes in a maximum length of 12'. My house doesn't have a trim piece on my two-story walls, but simply a small piece of flashing to handle that joint (which is painted the same color as the house). Either detail is fine, but I don't think the short, horizontal trim piece near the peak in the drawing is necessary, and the design would look better without it. Your entryway is beautiful as is, just needs restyled a bit. A console cabinet deep enough to hold all of your family’s grab-and-go shoes would be more function. Then just the bench on the other side. No board and batten needed there!

The other side: try to visualize it with new closet doors, and eventually new floors. And less mess!

I see your entry now. Thanks for adding the picture.

The existing ledge sure makes it complicated. Personally, I wouldn’t add board and batten to this area. If I did, however, I’d do it only to the height of the ledge everywhere.

I wouldnt add the board and batten either, personally, but, if you like it, then only up to the existing ledge.
