Board and Batten siding help
Hello,
We are to the point of picking siding for our new construction home. I am looking for help trying to decide on board and batten for the whole front of the home or possibly just for the garage and front peak as shown in the picture. The peak is smaller in real life so the board and batten would not stand out so much. I would love to have some kind of combination of siding on the front though. The right side of the porch next to the last post is actually recessed in with an entrance to the mudroom on the side of the garage. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you in advance!

3 years agoThe house is already framed with the gable in the front. It is a one story home. We just added the gable for the look of a farmhouse rather than a ranch. I also forgot to mention that we changed the garage so the door is now facing the front of the home Here are a few photos:

Comments (15)My opinions only. OP, it's a little difficult to know what you mean by making the siding more modern. But to answer your specific questions: 1) Should I alternate siding materials? No. IMO alternating siding material can be done well but for the most part is poorly executed. From what I have seen it becomes a jumble of materials that detracts from the house. 2) Should we incorporate stone? No. Board and batten siding is classic and timeless. Stone is a passing fad in its current application, especially now with it being added to places where it doesn't belong. Don't get me wrong, stone can be appropriate and also classic, but not the way it is thrown about now on the exterior as some sort of stick on applique. Scroll through houzz's images to see which contemporary board and batten home appeals to you. Here is one in white that is contemporary. Comments (31)The Chelsea Building Products website says Everlast composite siding is a mixture of polymeric resin and granular stone. The Intertek Code Compliance Research Report CCRR-0201 says it's made of cellular (foamed) PVC with a chemically bonded acrylic cap (containing the color) with no mention of the granular stone which is probably some kind of stone dust. The report requires the siding to be installed over structural wood sheathing. The 4.5" and 6.875" reveal horizontal lap siding must be fastened every 16" with 2.5" s.s. screws or 2" roofing nails into the wall studs and the 11" reveal vertical board & batten siding must be fastened with 1 5/8" s.s. screws every 7.5" into the wood sheathing (which is a lot of screws)....See More

3 years agoI'd do B&B all over but I don't like where the elevations show the horizontal trim piece on your plan on the garage.

The horizontal trim piece is likely there to conceal a seam since I believe Hardie panel comes in a maximum length of 12'. My house doesn't have a trim piece on my two-story walls, but simply a small piece of flashing to handle that joint (which is painted the same color as the house). Either detail is fine, but I don't think the short, horizontal trim piece near the peak in the drawing is necessary, and the design would look better without it. 3 years ago@kudzu9, I agree that it's there to conceal a seam. Ours is. However, we used 10ft tall boards on the first level since our first floor has 10 ft ceilings. They used 9 ft boards above that on ours so we had another trim board closer to the eave. I like the detail it adds to ours.
