LP Smart Siding Feedback
Comments (34)I'm a retired finish carpenter, US Northwest coast. I put primed 8" Smartside on my own two-story house three summers ago. I chose to vent the wall behind the siding. That took a bit of time. I then pre-painted each piece with one coat of SW Superpaint, rolled and back-brushed, and then did a second coat once the siding was on the wall, also rolled and back-brushing. I primed all nail heads before the final coat. I flashed behind every joint and caulked every seam with OSI. I faced nailed every board by hand to eliminate overdriving the nails; no air nailer was used on the siding. It took 400 hours by myself, working evenings and weekends, but that also included tearing off layers of old siding, fixing the sheathing, replacing the soffits, replacing all the windows, and building a new front porch, so it wasn't a normal siding job. This summer, for the first time, I checked all caulked seams for shrinkage and cut out and re-caulked and painted small sections around four windows and three joints on the west and south walls. The siding and joints everywhere else looked as pristine as the day it was installed. I have absolutely no complaints or concerns with my decision to go with this brand of siding. One final thing, I left a unpainted 1-inch triangle-shaped piece out on the patio exposed to the weather the summer I did the job. It's still sitting there. The edges have swelled only slightly and cracked slightly, but I still can't chip even a small piece from the edge with my fingernail. I'm beginning to think it's indestructible....See MoreVinyl Board and Batten - wider widths
Comments (17)Hate on vinyl, if you must. But it is low-maintenance and inexpensive. If you take your time to try to hide things like J channel and generally remember how the real wood product would look - and emulate that - it's a reasonable choice. OP, I hope you found a product that will meet your needs. I DO find that if you hunt around online, you can find some profiles that are a little unusual. And, using something other than a D4 profile will, again, make it look less like vinyl. Using the longer lengths, to minimize seams can also help. There are more products available that you'll find sample boards for at a single supplier. And if you find something workable, you can often search for a dealer in your area, and behold! That said, the Certainteed product is the only one I see that is wider than 8" on a cursory search....See MoreHardie Siding, LP Smart Siding or Everlast Siding
Comments (8)I'm getting ready to build next spring and I've only read good things about Everlast. Seems to be used mostly on the east coast. The only issue is they do not offer a shingle version which I need. I would like to use the same brand on this house that has shiplap, shingle and board and batten siding for color match purposes. I've also read good things about NuCedar (shingle siding) and Celect. Both of those products are cellular PVC with a baked on paint. There are way too many threads on Houzz regarding how bad the cement board products are. They seem very very dependent on perfect installation and what climate they are used in. I'm in Michigan so I am not messing with a product that likes to absorb water if not perfectly primed....See MoreMetal or vinyl board and batten siding that approximates a wood look?
Comments (13)@JosephWatkins We are currently in same position. We have samples of Celect Cellular Composite Board & Batten and the Everlast BB. We like the Celect better. We are also considering Steel Board and Batten panels. The steel would be our 1st choice. Just hard to get information on all of them....See Morehoussaon
