Hardie Siding, LP Smart Siding or Everlast Siding

In the framing phase of new construction and had been planning on using Hardie shingle and clapboard siding but a few people recently suggested looking into either Everlast Siding or LP Smart siding. I am not as familiar with either of these options but seem to be highly rated. I am a fan of how the white Hardie looks but it sounds like it is more work for the install part of it. Does anyone have any insight or opinions/preference towards any of these options they can share? We are going for a modern farmhouse look with white siding and black windows/doors. Thank you!

I live in a modern house that was built in 2001 and have owned it for almost all that time. It has Hardie board and batten and it looks pristine still: zero deterioration. I did paint it 5 years ago, but that was because I wanted to change the color, not because it needed it. I can't tell you about other brands, but my Hardie siding will outlast me....

My brother in law built a modern farmhouse about a year ago and chose the white LP smart siding over Hardie. He’s extremely happy with it, and now we have decided to use it on our new construction as well.

Smart siding is still a composite siding...it is made of glued sawdust. I "wood" not use it.

If you search the forum you will see the subject has been discussed before. My two reservations are that the company once made a hardboard product that rotted quickly resulting in a class-action lawsuit but they did reimburse the unlucky homeowners. Now they have added zinc borate to aspen-wood oriented-strand-board and covered it with a resin saturated paper face with three coats of edge sealer. This product seems to be working well but I'm always waiting for the bad news from anything that relies on chemicals to protect glued softwood wafers. My other concern is that LP says it has to be painted every 3 to 5 years. Field cut edges must be well sealed. Hopefully the maintenance schedule is overly conservative. CMU = concrete masonry unit, aka concrete block so it's all the same, split face is just the fact that it has a texture vs. being smooth faced. If they are having water issues it's because it was constructed poorly in which case the only proper solution is to rip it out. Bricks and CMU absorb water so if constructed properly they will have a way for the water to get out. They aren't meant to keep water from getting in the building, that's what vapor barriers aka Tyvek do. They do however protect the barrier. So if the house doesn't have a good barrier, poor flashing and the CMU & brick aren't breathing, you have water issues. ETA: Just noticed your comment to JDS about weep holes and flashing so I'm sure I was being redundant with information you already knew. But either way, if she's having water issues, take it off. Sealing isn't the best route either as you trap in moisture.

4" smooth will be difficult to find, I believe. You might review Boral siding. Very good quality, and available in smooth, but 6" (5.5" actual) is the smallest they make. We ended up going with Hardie clapboard and board and batten siding and I’m very happy with how it came out!

I'm getting ready to build next spring and I've only read good things about Everlast. Seems to be used mostly on the east coast. The only issue is they do not offer a shingle version which I need. I would like to use the same brand on this house that has shiplap, shingle and board and batten siding for color match purposes. I've also read good things about NuCedar (shingle siding) and Celect. Both of those products are cellular PVC with a baked on paint. There are way too many threads on Houzz regarding how bad the cement board products are. They seem very very dependent on perfect installation and what climate they are used in. I'm in Michigan so I am not messing with a product that likes to absorb water if not perfectly primed.

If you want lifetime siding, then you simply choose a Hardie installer that can show certification. It's not rocket science. We remodeled about 10 years ago and I installed more Hardie board to match the original Hardie siding (which is now 20 years old); it's all just fine. I'd still choose this product over a composite material any day. But good luck whatever you decide.

Why would you choose it over a composite material? Have you seen NuCedar or Everlast siding?

I have seen composite materials such as decking. It holds up pretty well, but does not remain as pristine as Hardie over the years. Personally, I'd be more confident in fiber cement over a plastic/synthetic, but you need to do what makes you comfortable.
