IMO frist declutter the space the cabinet is busy the bookshelves busy the curtains definatelt need to go. I think the wall color I can't tell what it is either. I think the best is to choose a wall color that works with the white in the rug and then a very pale teal for drapes in a nice linen .You need good lighting in that space too. I think the rug should be the star so very little in the way of accessories and for sure not on the caniet since the TV should be hung just above the cabinet it is too high now. Then if you think you need a bit of accent maybe 2 pilloes on the sofa

I t’s so hard to discern colors on dofferent monitors. On mine, the ones you have seem to play very well with the rug- both the colors and pattern. Looks like it has some of the sofa color and one that complements the rug.

So many possibilities. Can you show or describe others angles of this room and adjoining rooms? Do you have curtains on windows nearby?

Do you need privacy and/or light control with curtains? Do you have shades or blinds on that window?

Can you show your purple chairs?

I like your idea of bringing in jewel tones, just need to see more context. Your rug is not loud or bossy, it’s fine for adding any colors you like. This board can be quite color and pattern phobic … just a heads-up. ;)

Have a vision for entire room, regarding bringing all your colors together in a cohesive and interesting way before buying anything.

Suggest oatmeal linen drapery for a neutral backdrop, creating more flexibility for other choices and it won’t overtake your lovely rug. If possible, place drapes on both windows (would have to remove corner shelving, but that would be a good idea anyway).

Be sure whatever you choose has a connection: cushions, art and I’d edit console and add vivid pottery.

If you want to create a more congenial seating area, pull couch in so feet are resting on rug, do the same for the chair (try slanting) and ground with a coffee table.

Thanks all, I probably should have posted the picture once I had actually set up the room. The photo is after just rolling out the rug, which is why the sofa is not on the rug, and the coffee table is not in the right location, and the vacuum is still out. ;-)
I don’t have plans to replace any of the furniture, although I am open to considering relocating them. And editing the clutter is definitely necessary. I have two kids and it gets very cluttered very quickly, but the room is very functional, eg I read the books on the bookshelf and like having books around for the kids to see.
I definitely would have more of an eclectic style with lots of color if I were the only one living here. My husband is more transitional style.
