Kitchens Design Dilemma Paint

Kitchen remodeling

Hi looking for suggestions for remodeling this kitchen . This is what I am thinking
1.Repainting the cabinets and wall
2. Bringing the breakfast bar down to the sink level
3.Changing the countertop to quartz . I would also like to add storage wherever possible .
Please pour in your suggestions!

Painting walls and changing the bar stools, corbels and clock would go far with little spent. For more change focus on the island and adding white counters would be my next changes and if cabiniet color needs changing I would opt to gut this kitchen before painting what you have for the finish will be better and you could improve your storage options greatly.

I think if you went with t shape or a rectangle island your kitchen could feel like these.

Do you like the layout?

I haven't paid for quartz countertops for many years, but they were a big investment for us. If quartz is still a significant expense, I would not add them to this kitchen. I think you'd be better off saving and planning for a total rearrange that improves storage and workflow.

If you'd like to see what a new layout would look like, post a sketch of the space with dimensions (most important are the measurements of the walls in the "L" and the location of the sink plumbing.

As billl said, moisture should be addressed with proper ventilation (fan). If you do not have one already, plan to put one in. I don't have personal experience with IKEA cabinets, though I have a disassembled one in my basement waiting to be installed as a utility sink. I read very positive things about the quality:cost ratio. Personally, I generally prefer drawers rather than cabinets. Anything you can do to get extra drawers would be good. Unless the subfloor under the tub is damaged or you damage the tub while removing the flooring, there should be no reason you need to remove the tub. And even if you remove the tub, you could probably still reinstall it. I replaced my tub (it was harvest gold) and there had been a small amount of water damage. I pulled up the underlayment and the subfloor was in good shape. With water damage, you really don't know what to expect until you finish demolition.

I also don't think you'd need to change the slate in the entry. Does it have a color you can work off of and love for the kitchen? If you don't think light painted cabinets will suit your taste or lifestyle, then don't use them, or use them sparingly and do the rest in a wood. There are so many colors and species of wood to choose from. ...Or one of my favorite kitchens is one of Crown Point's 'Early American' kitchens done in black painted cabinets with a combo of wood and grayish granite counters...So light colors are not your only option with paint. I've seen 'Colonial' done in reds, greens, and gray blues. What other colors are going on in your house (on architectural elements as well as your other furnishing and decor)? What other color of wood? Is all the trim painted or wood? I think that besides continuity of style it is good to have continuity of the architectural detail colors, like on wood trim. Keeping it simple is good advice, since that always seem to better stand the test of time and fit into more types of styles and decor. If the builder wasn't fanatical about doing authentic colonial details, which would give you cues from which to work, I wouldn't worry enough about the integrity of the 1970s version as to limit all of your material options, like granite color. You just want to avoid styles that will jump out as being different from the rest of the home...as if you've stepped into a different house. Elizabeth, the floors have to go as they look better in photos. In person they scream cheap. It is cheap laminate. I will also have bare spots where the wall will be removed that I have to fix up. I was planning on putting some tile in the kitchen area but may just do hardwood throughout the whole house. I have also heard that the ikea cabinets hold up rather well but it seems that they use quite a bit of MDF with a foil over it. I personally would prefer a wood face as that sees quite a bit of abuse and potential liquid spills (I am just at the beginning with a 3 year old and 1.5 year old).

removal of the diag pantry would allow the nicest upgrade . You dont list that in your introduction so it's not clear how you can really accomplish the added storage which is the most critical goal of what you listed so far. If you spec out complete redo of the island to the one level with all new drawers/ a bit bigger / will that accomplish the increased storage? would you accept leaving the perimeter as is , in such a plan? its possible the perimeter cabs could remain wood if you got a new island .........choosing painted island could complement the space .

Normally I don't like painting wood cabinets, but doing so would echo the white bookcases in your living room and add flow to the room. The walls should also be painted the same color as the living room walls for a unified space.

Improving ventilation over the gas cooktop is something I would want to do. Maybe see if storage can be improved in the pantry. The glass front cabinets reduce storage because you can't really cram them as full as you might.

It's a dated but not really bad kitchen. I would echo the others in thinking you might weigh the amount you want to invest over saving for a re-do.
