Kitchens Design Dilemma Paint

Kitchen remodeling

Hi looking for suggestions for remodeling this kitchen . This is what I am thinking
1.Repainting the cabinets and wall
2. Bringing the breakfast bar down to the sink level
3.Changing the countertop to quartz . I would also like to add storage wherever possible .
Please pour in your suggestions!

Painting walls and changing the bar stools, corbels and clock would go far with little spent. For more change focus on the island and adding white counters would be my next changes and if cabiniet color needs changing I would opt to gut this kitchen before painting what you have for the finish will be better and you could improve your storage options greatly.

I think if you went with t shape or a rectangle island your kitchen could feel like these.

Do you like the layout?

I haven't paid for quartz countertops for many years, but they were a big investment for us. If quartz is still a significant expense, I would not add them to this kitchen. I think you'd be better off saving and planning for a total rearrange that improves storage and workflow.

If you'd like to see what a new layout would look like, post a sketch of the space with dimensions (most important are the measurements of the walls in the "L" and the location of the sink plumbing.

If you hire a kitchen designer s/he will have contacts in the other trades. You asked, "Is there anything you would change about the rest of the kitchen design?" And to be honest, my answer is "LOTS." Here are some of the things I would want to be different if it was my kitchen (besides the banquette as already mentioned). -the fridge and wall ovens are right next to each other. That makes it difficult to access them both at the same time, and I'm not sure if some kind of buffer is required by the specs. It seems like there should be one but that's just my intuition and I could be dead wrong. The oven handles might interfere with the fridge opening fully, too. -there's no counter landing zone next to the fridge. The closest spot is nearby, but that is next to the sink so likely to have dirty or clean dishes piled on it. -ditto for the wall ovens. It's nice to take your 20lb turkey out and slide it right onto the counter rather than truck it over to another side of the room. -when the fridge door or freezer drawer are open the walkway into the eating area will be blocked. -what's that gap to the left of the stove? It looks much too narrow to function as a passage to another room. -without dimensions it's hard to know, but it looks like a pretty long haul through the center of your kitchen to get from sink to stove and vice versa. Not good when you're carrying a pot of spaghetti to drain, or if like me you do canning and regularly blanche food then quickly cool it in ice water in your sink. For me, I need my sink and stove to be mere steps apart.

Are any of the short walls by fridge and stove arch load bearing or contain ducting or electrical chases? I would be eliminating as many as I could to improve layout possibilities if you plan to replace cabs....that means drywall repair but worth it I think. All those jigs and jags make the room choppy. For example, removing that little wall by the fridge means you could run cabs under the window in an L-shape and eliminate that tiny cubbyhole with window. I am not sure what the purpose of the stove arch was/is but that would be high on my list of things to eliminate. What is in that short wall by the fire extinguisher? What is the space between the fridge and the doorway? If a closet, that would be a candidate for removal too. You will need to decide on how extensive you want to go and that will probably be determined by eliminating or keeping the cabs. If you eliminate them and are on a tight budget, look at Ikea cabs when there is a sale. If you keep the cabs, I would probably forgo spending a lot of money on new countertops so big box stock laminate counters should run $150-250. Using LVT tiles on the floor, painting walls, demoing the brick arch, centering stove on the wall space, removing wood valance, ditching curtains and blinds for Roman shades, and I assume updating lighting but only because I cannot see what is there are all things that could be done within a modest budget. Additionaly, how old is the flooring...old enough to be worried about asbestos?

No expert here, but the layout is confusing to me. What are all those dark, shaded blocks--new walls? It seems to me the traffic flow through your original kitchen would be better, but without knowing what you are trying to achieve here, it's hard to say. I'm right handed and appreciate having my dishwasher to the right, but plenty of right-handed people will tell you that having it on the left isn't a problem at all.

removal of the diag pantry would allow the nicest upgrade . You dont list that in your introduction so it's not clear how you can really accomplish the added storage which is the most critical goal of what you listed so far. If you spec out complete redo of the island to the one level with all new drawers/ a bit bigger / will that accomplish the increased storage? would you accept leaving the perimeter as is , in such a plan? its possible the perimeter cabs could remain wood if you got a new island .........choosing painted island could complement the space .

Normally I don't like painting wood cabinets, but doing so would echo the white bookcases in your living room and add flow to the room. The walls should also be painted the same color as the living room walls for a unified space.

Improving ventilation over the gas cooktop is something I would want to do. Maybe see if storage can be improved in the pantry. The glass front cabinets reduce storage because you can't really cram them as full as you might.

It's a dated but not really bad kitchen. I would echo the others in thinking you might weigh the amount you want to invest over saving for a re-do.
