Ideas for trim carpentry on very large brick wall.

We want to add decorative trim work and possibly base cabinets (built-ins) along our very large brick wall so that we can mount a TV above the fireplace and have everything concealed. I’m having a very hard time even envisioning a design, and have had trouble finding comparable examples. Many that we’ve seen with tall cathedral ceilings have very large windows on the back wall on either side of the fireplace or the brick or stone work is limited to the center section. Here, our entire back wall is brick. Any ideas for what to do? Two photos of room are attached. Third photo is sort of what we are looking for, but not sure how to make it work on our wall.

Do you plan on painting the paneling as in the inspiration photo?

I would remove the mantle.

measure the space, and take a photo with the furnishings you must use in the space.

Do you already have the area rug you will be using in the space?

Hi Lynn - yes, agree, mantle needs to go or be reworked. But having a hard time figuring out a trim-paneling design to even start with. Not really wanting to cover all the brick from bottom to top, but wanting to incorporate something symmetrical and pleasing for a 65” tv to be centered above the fireplace.

Is the light from those windows super important? If not, I would "cheat" the windows. Hang your curtain rod high and wide (just a bit below the ceiling and almost all the way to the wall on each edge), but off centered to each window. Then hang woven blinds or a soft roman shade under the rod but on top of the window (to hide the brick). Hang panels on either side of each window and arrange them evenly. The windows will then look centered and you will have softened the wall considerably at a very low cost. South-facing walls are difficult, especially in lots of sunlight. You know the best way to get the bermuda to grow there is to plant some flowers or veggies there, and then the bermuda grass will move right in to choke them out. The issue with wildflowers is that most of them only bloom for a few weeks before they are replaced with other wildflowers coming into bloom in their time sequentially, so wildflowers will not necessarily look good in a prime location next to the house since you'll always have some that are fading and turning brown and going to seed. I love wildflowers, but not right up against the house in a prime location. Some of the plants that have done best for us along a west-facing wall include canna lilies, crinum lilies (be sure you put them where you want them because they form massive clumps that you'll never be able to move), verbena bonariensis (aka verbena-on-a-stick because it is tall with wiry stems), malva sylvestris 'Zebrina' (aka French hollyhocks, though not really a hollyhock, and it doesn't have the hollyhock rust issues that true hollyhocks have and it laughs at the heat), and lantana (in well-drained soil, as it won't come back if it has to sit in cold, soggy-wet soil all winter). Zinnias and cosmos also can do well on the south side of a house next to a brick wall, but be sure to plant one of the hybrids that have better disease tolerance because the lack of good air flow beside a house can lead to disease. Four o'clocks can do well on the south side of a house and, like crinums, they aren't easily moved once established so once you have them there, they tend to last forever.

You could also lean art on the console table (frankly, that scares me but tons of people do this) Your kitchen looks to be contemporary, but I would get a Hoosier cabinet for that wall for contrast...the prices might be a bit scary, but they hold their value well and can be sold for almost as much as you paid. Make sure to find one at an auction or estate sale or Craigslist (we don't pay full fare in my house, clearly... :))

It would definitely be trouble to have two groundcovers (they usually spread sideways ... ivy does for sure) abutting one another in the same bed. How would you keep them apart? (That looks like English ivy in the picture. Algerian ivy is similar, but is a more robust, more drought resistant plant as I understand it. @longbranchstitch ... " I’m curious about the ivy comment. We live in the PNW where we battle ivy all the time ... I personally would never set out to plant it." You can't identify any use that it would serve ... covering and smoothing over rough ground? ... erosion control? ...growing where no other plants will? ....low cost per square foot of cover? ...evergreen for all-season use? Those are some of the reasons a person might want it. If none of those reasons work for you, why don't you get a serious program going that includes IVY KILLER, and get rid of it? If it's somewhat useful and you don't want to get rid of it all, why don't you consider learning to manage it? For example you complain that it grows up trees. It takes literally one minute per year to severe all the ivy growing up a single tree trunk. If you have 180 trees, that's three hours per year to solve that problem! How much time would it take to mow a lawn on which 180 trees would fit? ... maybe 50 times that amount of time and it would require an expensive machine! So the trade-off for ivy seems possibly favorable on that count. Anyway, you can evaluate whether it could be useful to you, or not, and then either get rid of it or get it under control.

I vote no to adding any trim to the brick wall. Also if you plan to place the TV over the fireplace you'll need a way to divert the heat from the FP opening. That heat will damage the TV over time. Mantels are usually the best way to divert the heat if you are not able to recess the TV into the wall. You may have to rethink your direction.

What you're proposing is a fairly large, expensive and extensive project. Unless you are a design professional, you might consider someone who can draw the space to scale with all the details required. I love wood-paneled walls like the one you posted, but it's not a DIY project unless you really are skilled.

If you have a very good finish carpenter you could show him what you like--some of them are good at drawing elevations--and he can build it for you.
