Ideas for a red brick, north facing wall in SA
Comments (1)'Obsession' Nandina? Looks to be one of best looking ones for Nandina. Maybe Encore Azaleas if you're willing to put in effort to build raised bed for them if you have a tree on the west and east side to provide some shade during the summer. You know it's basically all shade half of the year though......See MoreNeed Help! Brick and Stone House Ideas? Or change all together?
Comments (39)PPF & cpartist - Thank you for the changes!! Kristen and Naf Naf I appreciate all the help. Thanks to everyone for your comments and opinions! Question - On the changes you both made the stone base around the house was still there. Do you recommend keeping that? Still working on the color of the brick. I will attach pictures of 3 of the bricks I have liked thus far. Just scroll right to left below. May go for a lighter option. Any ideas for a brick color? The one that the architect originally did I was not fond of. The dormers on the garage were to allow light in the bonus room so I would opt to keep them. Would you recommend changing the front facing garage dormer from a curved to a rectangular window to keep consistent with the windows? Would shutters on the front windows work - I was not thinking about having them. Front Entrance - I know everyone says to simplify but would you recommend adding some an element to the front door. I found a picture but I would not go as detailed probably. Thoughts on the concept? I just wanted some character but not sure how to go about it. Roof - I will look into Slate. Is it generally very expensive? Sorry for taking so long to reply. I have been working long hours....See MorePlease help with exterior siding/brick ideas!
Comments (12)Yes, all shutters off. Whatever siding color you pick, paint both doors the same color. (A different style door would work better than the Victorian one) I vote for same siding color for all of it, a color that works well with your gray roof since a lot of it shows, although Emmeren's photo is an interesting way to handle the two finishes of the siding.. Since you're just moving in, landscaping is the last thing you're probably thinking about. But this house could look amazing with much deeper beds with taller plants in back, perennials, bushes, hardscaping, and more. When you come up for air, and if you have some budget left, a small garden center can help you come up with the plan. Good luck. It's a pretty house. Cream and gray. Add bright blue doors (replace Victorian door) (This post is a good example for people who want to paint their brick--next owners may not like painted brick, or they wish it were unpainted. I'm usually pro-brick because it adds texture to a façade and can work well with very modern colors--navy, black, charcoal. I usually suggest a brick walkway to enhance the brick and link it to beautiful landscaping. Why brick is considered worse than widely accepted vinyl siding, I don't know.)...See MoreHelp! Ideas for trim around brick fireplace and wooden beams?
Comments (2)You would need to remove some of it to see how it looks without it. Could be that there is a sizeable gap between the brick and the wood floor. Since that trim ties right in with all the other baseboard trim, it would look odd to change it to something different. Here's a good article I found regarding how hardwood floors should be installed around a brick fireplace: https://macwoods.com/hardwood-meets-brick-fireplace/ I find it concerning that there is no hearth beneath the fireplace. It is required that there be a non-combustible hearth at least 16" - 20" deep and 8" to 12" wider than the opening, depending on this size of the opening. You may want to consider adding Glass Doors to your fireplace if you plan on using it....See Moreoaktonmom
