I heard a siren?
Comments (9)Yup. tornadoes happen all times of year, but you still need the right weather conditions at the time, to spawn them. The worst time of year in DFW, is usually in the March-June period, when spring storms are most active. In the cooler months, they most often occur when there are warm vs cold air masses, butting heads, which create the thunderstorms that are associated with spawning tornadoes. The two kinda go hand in hand. You can also get'em, if a hurricane comes in over us, especially from across Baja, as most Gulf hurricanes don't get this far north before missing us to the east. Lived in a lot of places, and for the most part, each has its own variety of weather issues, earthquakes, wildfires, floods, or something, to challenge us to stay safe. When you hear those sirens, though, you have to react quickly, as you tend to have seconds, to no more than a few minutes, before you might get hit. Be glad we now have more doppler radar in our area, helping to forecast and sound the alarm, for tornadic circulation. (Of course, without a shelter.....that may be a moot point.)...See MoreWe kicked off tornado season today
Comments (7)Rita ~ I'm glad you didn't have a tornado. I've been watching the weather and saw all the stuff heading from your way toward us. We will get your storms and change of weather starting tomorrow evening. The temps reached 75° today and we had windows opened all day. Tomorrow the high will be about 50° and the low about freezing. There are severe thunderstorms predicted with high winds and possible tornadic conditions and also a chance of snow before we wake up Tuesday or maybe the snow is for Wednesday. This weather is so crazy. I was out looking at the forcythia starting to bloom today. I hope the freeze, if we get it, won't ruin it. Linda...See MoreDo you take tornado warnings seriously?
Comments (30)I do take the siren warnings seriously. Around here, they do not blow the sirens unless a funnel, or a very threatening cloud with a vortex in it, has been spotted. I've got place in the basement reserved for such events. It's in the SW corner under a heavy workbench. I've examined aftermath photos and came to believe that one needs protection from falling and cave-in debris. For example, I've seen a house that was shoved off its foundation and then dropped part way into the basement. it came to rest on stuff that was in the basement. One of my concerns is rupturing a gas line and getting trapped if a gas fire results. I don't worry about what happens to me if I am killed outright. Fortunately, I have had to take shelter only once in the last 10 years. We watch the channel carrying storm news and they will show the storm center and it path. We've had threats, but the worst was a hail storm about 4 years ago that did a lot of damage to autos and roofs. It banged up my roof vents....See MoreOff topic: Tornado
Comments (14)Thanks to all for your relief that I'm OK. Donna, my sister lives on a ranch in a rural area East of 39 and North of Knights Griffin Rd. (near Kathleen). In fact, she and her beloved are members of the Kathleen Historical Society. I walked the property as much as I could navigate yesterday, mainly to see if there was any damage to the fence line. We have cleared this 5 acre plot minimally so it's tricky with all the fallen branches and underbrush. Amazingly, I found only one of the hundreds of trees on the property that was snapped in two, it's a widow-maker because it's still hanging and will be dangerous to get all the way down. Pretty big pine. There was one area that I couldn't get to way in the back to check the fence line due to all the fallen branches, my husband will have to check that out when he gets the chance. After what I witnessed, it's unbelievable what contortions huge trees can take without being broken down....See MoreKathsgrdn
