Design Dilemma Home Decorating dining room

Dining room design ideas

last year

We have these chairs and nothing else. What kind of table, rug,sideboard etc works for this room.
The walls are light grey.
We would love an elegant look on a budget if that’s even possible…lol

Go dark rich browns with your paint. Go heavy ornate table--yes to shopping for all the old cast off diningroom sets THEY ARE BACK!!

I like both Rebunky's and MG's ideas. If you don't want a full banquette, you could still have a window seat and then a dining room table. We had a Craftsman home once and, in addition to dividers between dining and living similar to what MG shared, we had a window seat in the dining room plus wainscot in the dining area in Craftsman-style (not beadboard) with nice, wide moldings at the top to create the plate rail. That and your trim on your doors/windows should easily keep the Craftsman details you love. Of course, I realize that all Craftsman moldings probably aren't the same but we were able to recreate our moldings in a family room addition using various pieces of readily available moldings from HD. I would just add that, imho, if you end up having the w/d in the kitchen, I really don't see the problem with that. I wish I had a picture to share but I someone who has a w/d, side by side, not stacked, in their kitchen behind bookcase doors built on strong piano hinges. The door glide easily and she had some books and pretties displayed. Most of the pretties had museum gel to help hold them in place. She does laundry regularly so the clothes are loaded, washed, folded and put away without laundry piling up. Without a laundry room, you would need to do that in order to not create a mess area. If that's your style, it could work well for you.

Hello Hillari Lube , You have a lot going on in a tiny space! AND you say the word, 'wonky,' like I do - you from New York by any chance? Anyway - the big piece that neither of us seem thrilled with - would that fit rotated to the wall immediately to it's right? It would make it less of a focal point and with a nice desk, small shelf and a painting above where it is now - you have a much more functional space & hopefully something that takes the eye away from the big piece... From there it seems console table or small bookcase the L side of the couch would set up something that defines a small circular table for a dining area. Hope that helps. When you are young and have a small space and not forever furniture is a wonderful time to have fun with your decor. If I were you I would paint the table top navy to go with the chair seats, keeping the nicer wood on the table base and chairs. Now comes the fun part - dressing the room and table. Pick a table runner or place mats or dishes that will work as your inspiration for the room. You can go bright and bold, or pastel or neutrals or a mix. With navy blue and the light wood there are 100 color schemes you could choose. You could paint the walls the light teal blue gray and use creamy white dishes with these placemats. You could do red placemats and light blue walls with these dishes. You could do a light coral/peach wall color with white dishes and this table runner Or light gray blue walls with this table runner Linen white walls and gray dishes with this runner . . .

The wood trim is beautiful and gives character and texture to your house. I'm with everyone else suggesting that you use paint and tweaks on your lighting, art work, and furnishings to lighten the spaces. Here's an article on Houzz about paints that go with wood trim--not all of them are white. Yes, please show the room, as well as an example of your decor style(s) … such as the living room.

Tons of possibilities; more info would help narrow things down.

Is there lighting you’re keeping in the room?

Is the kitchen directly adjoining this room? Is it open concept? Are there windows?

In order to give relevant advice, could you provide more details and show a picture of dining room, as its size and configuration are important in suggesting a shape and size of table.

You mentioned you would like elegant. Seeing your living room would help narrow down style suggestions and colors, for rug as well. The dining room overall has to suit your home (chairs are flexible enough to head in a few directions). Based on chair legs alone, I’d go with a lighter, elegant but non formal look, if it suits your home. Choose rug last and consider a non matching side board, which will open up more options and price choices, even second hand (paint if needed). I think it’s important to look for on line inspiration, to at least have a direction and making decidions will be easier and the look coordinated.

Based on the upholstery and the wall color I would have suggested a dark wood, but the chair legs are light. I don't think a dark table will look right when the chair legs are light.

The casual finish on the legs of your chairs doesn't lean 'elegant. It leans 'casual modern'/ You can stain the legs to match the table you select. Right now your chairs would work with a table like this.

Provide a photo of the room and any inspirational photos of what you might want.

This below would be more elegant. See the stain on the chair legs.

This is the room. Sorry about the mess. We ended been dumping all sorts of junk in there…lol
The room on the left is also the living room..also another blank slate. But I’m doing one room at a time.
Everything in here is going except the chairs.

Nice room to work with but your style should extend from one room in the house to the other. Get a style and then work from there for your selection. The room has bad lighting so place a chandelier on your wish list.

The rug is fairly traditional in style but It's not what I'd select for this room.
