To Separate or Not to Separate

So I got several roses from Burling as bands. They are all quite small and pretty much dormant at present. As you can see in the photos, several cuttings were put in one pot and a number of them rooted. They were left together in the pot. I intend to move them up to gallon sized pots and my question is this: should I pot them all up together as they are? Or, should I carefully separate them and pot them up individually? When I am starting cuttings, I normally separate them when I’m potting them up, but I don’t know how long these have been growing together and how matted the roots might be. What do you do in a case like this?

Thanks Ben…I guess I was so surprised to see how many were in some of the band pots and thought surely she would have separated them herself so as to have more to sell. But then, she is such a generous soul that she might figure it’s one more way to give to folks.

So there was actually closer to 12 plants, I kept fiveish in the original pot and added a mix of sand perlite and potting soil, they came apart nice and easy, I used the same soil mix to pot the other 5 separately I got the soil lightly moist, left 3 on my window sill with the original pot of 5ish, and the other 2 went in my aquarium of cuttings. Should I water regularly now, or should I be careful, also what kind of lighting should I be using(keep out of direct sun light?) I really appreciate any tips or comments. Cheers Jay.

I found this: "Whew . . . this is not easy to find. . . . All this stuff about lean and fat comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database, which is the basis for SP's and most other online nutritional databases. But finding out about how it's defined is very difficult. I found the following paragraphs from a paper called "the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database for Fresh Pork" by USDA staff: Separation of lean meat, separable fat, connective tissue, and bone—-The technical perspective is that of the “careful consumer” who conscientiously separates these tissues. The most difficult separation is between the trimmable (separable) fat and connective tissue, which lies in the “seams” between muscles. The separation was accomplished by scraping the co-mingled tissues with a knife blade, such that the soft fat was separated from the tougher, stringy connective tissue. Separable lean tissue should be relatively free of trimmable fat, while the trimmable fat should be reasonably free of connective tissue. Separable lean meat, separable fat, and connective tissue were removed from the bones as cleanly as possible. Separable fat (i.e., external fat and seam fat), bone, and connective tissue were removed from raw and cooked products and weighed to determine the relative weights of separable fat and separable lean meat. They usually are three separate trees...the typical way of doing this is to stick three saplings in the same pot. This looks awesome when the tree is young. No idea what it does in the long run, but probably doesn't maximize the trees life expectancy. I've seen old single specimens of River Birch...they look fine. They might look kind of sad and lonely when the tree is small. If you ARE going to separate them, I'd do it now. Not the ideal time of year, but the alternative is planting them now, digging them up later, and traumatizing them twice. You may want to pull apart circling roots anyway on a clearance tree. If they are potted them out of the pot and them in a bucket of water briefly to soften the roots and make it easier to pull them apart. Then I dump the bucket of water th the planting hole(s?) and wait for it to drain. Maybe partially shade them with a tarp when the real heat hit?

I would definitely separate them, as they grow larger they’d start to crowd each other out. I’ve had to do it several times before, just be gentle when you pull them apart to get as many roots intact as possible. You’ll have more plants to plant elsewhere, or gift to friends.

Let’s see if I can remember…
Two Of Renae, two Vineyard Song, Sweet Chariot, Juane Desprez, Perfume Breeze and Jeri Jennings. And then she threw in a few freebies, The Prince, Happy Child and Country Living, all three David Austin roses. She wouldn’t let me pay for them. Once I separate them, I might have quite a few to share with others so I will pass the love along. I think that would make her happy.

I'd definitely tease them apart. Very gently, water well, and keep them in the shade after doing it.

So I separated all the roses that had more than one cutting in each pot and it went well. Out of the two pots of Renae, I now have 8. Two pots of Vineyard Song produced 9, and most of the others had multiples as well, so I ended up with 30 some pots of baby roses from the original 11. Burling told me when I was there that I should start my own little nursery business, and I conclude she is trying to help me get started. :) I told her that at this point I am only learning all I can. After that, we will see. I’m thinking that Vineyard Song would make an amazing hedge somewhere…

She certainly does have a big heart. And she’s obviously very gifted. Did you know she is responsible for updating the rose gardens at Hearst Castle? She told me she’s doing all the custom propagation for that and is 90 percent finished. I had no idea!

I would definitely separate them, I had to do this with a few last year.

Interesting that she sent Austin's, I asked her about them this season and she said she didn't carry them anymore 🤔 I wonder if she is getting rid of her stock. I'm a bit jealous.

DirtDigger, she doesn’t technically carry DA roses anymore …she told me doesn’t sell them anymore, but she had a few bands there and wanted to give me some. I think The Prince she gave me is the last one she had. Besides that, she had Country Living, Happy Child, and Heritage. I don’t remember seeing any more. I was just so happy for The Prince that I almost did a dance right then and there.

I’ll keep you in mind, Amy. I have only two of Country Living. At this point, they are such tiny little babies that I don’t want to make any promises. I’ll see how well they develop this summer before I share them around.

Ah, DirtDigger, the Prince has a charm that is irresistible. I would love to promise rooted cuttings to you and others when mine is big enough to propagate, but that would be counting my chicks before they hatch, I fear. It is such a very tiny baby stick of a plant just now, but he is in my greenhouse and already pushing out some new growth at ground level. He might grow fast! It is my dream to some day be able to propagate and sell roses. I am still learning though and not quite ready to get into that.

Here’s an update for alrt, the one who mentioned wanting Country Living DA rose, if I have extras. I have two plants that have grown well and are in one gallon pots. I plan to keep one of them. If you still want one, please pm me.
