Raptor666: I have separated them before without problems. I in fact look for pots at the store that have more than one in it but they should not have grown too large so the roots are not wrapped around. Here is how I do it: Cantaloups and watermelons are generally sold at the seedling stage with just one or two sets of true leaves. Water the pot well so the soil medium (which is usually peat moss or some thing else really porous and falls apart easily) is well soaked. Take the plant out of pot. I take a thin sharp nail or similar wire. Poke the ball vertically and just separate those roots. If the roots are already going around in the pot then first take a sharp blade and make a few vertical cuts only on the outside of the root ball so to divide those wrapped up roots. Plant each one individually directly in the prepared garden soil.

A few addenda: Some fasciation is caused by organisms called phytoplasmas; if a rose had multiple fasciated canes, there are probably scientists who would like to test which class of phytoplasmas it belongs to. And about the splitting of a cane: that would be a total disaster for the reasons mentioned elsewhere. Where the canes are joined, they are pith to pith with no meristemic tissue. You might get lucky and get a callus along the cut, but the pith would still be exposed and that would allow fungi, etc. into the center of the rose. Cutting would also weaken the two canes that grew up dependent on each other for some support, although not for nutrients. This fall, if you see Cock'sComb growing,take a close look. It's the big 'flower' that's so good as a dried flower because in it, fasciation is passed along in seeds. There are unfasciated related plants in the wild that are just a small tuft of 'bloom'.

Hi corysc I have a 3 piece sectional in my family room. For my "coffee table" I have an upholstered ottoman which we routinely put our feet on. When we have people over I put trays on the upholstered ottoman and that serves as a place for people to put drinks. When I rearrange my furniture (when I can put sconces for lighting on the wall) then I'll be able to add one end table and that will be nice. Another challenge with sectionals is lighting. As I mentioned I'm going to have sconces installed on the L shaped wall behind my sofa, but for a sectional as you have, away from the wall, where will you put lights? I like the arrangement as I have it in my family room, but, in general I'm not a big coffee table/side table kind of gal. It seems like people are always bumping in to them and with kids, they aren't the most friendly of surfaces. Is there a TV in that room, if so is it directly across from the sectional?

Hi Guys, Going to stop by Home Depot today to pick up soil for the FLF, did a Google search but didn't find a definitive answer as of which type of soil would be best? I am thinking a well-drained soil? Cactus soil + perlite? I prefer to buy from either Home Depot or Lowe's and keep it simple since I'm still a newbie. Hopefully someone can help me make the right decision for the soil. Also, when dividing the 2 branches into 2 separate pots, should I clean out all the soil from the roots in a bucket of water so it doesn't go into shock and make sure the roots doesn't get dried? And if they are stuck together, can I safely cut them apart to pot in their own pots? (Hopefully they're two separate branches) Thanks in advance.
