New jade plants, single pot. Separation?

Hey guys I'm pretty new to this forum and have been looking through all of the amazing jade plants you guys have been posting, and I have been inspired.
I went to my local nursery to buy a single jade plant as small as I could find, unfortunately they only had one jade plant in stock, it looks to me as if there is 6 or 7 separate small jade plants in this single pot.

I would like to separate these into separate pots, but I am worried the roots are probably tangled together, and I don't want to hurt the plant.
I'll upload pictures, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Comments (35)Randy, I appreciate your apology. You have to understand that you use jades in a different way. You say you "have a little higher standard of material" and you also said "different strokes for different folks"...well I personally don't like bonsai'd jades, just like you don't like my tree, but we all have different opinions (and by the way I would never say that unless asked...but I'm saying it now to make a point, so I apologize if you took any offense to that). I have an adult tree that I nurtured back to health and that I love very much. When you say "ideal quality material", that sounds very foreign to me. I just have houseplants. I don't sell them or make them into bonsai. And if they are not "ideal", I learn to love them or I try and fix them. In this case, I was simply asking if the drooping branches are dangerous for the tree...I wasn't asking if you or anyone else liked it. I was too afraid of speaking up at the time, but your "compost" comment was hurtful and unneccessary. I've done nothing but the right thing for this jade, and I know how to take care of a jade...but I can't help it if the previous owners caused the branches to look so strangly, and I can't help it if I happen to like it! Yes, I know it's from not being in enough sun, but the damage was done. Anyway, my question was answered (with lack of aesthetic opinion, which is how it should be unless asked)...and it is not healthy to have those dangly branches, so I pruned my tree, and I'm happy I did so. Gnome, Thank you for your constructive advice. I agree...a nice heavy trunk is worth working with. I'm doing everything I can to keep it healthy, which is why I pruned it. It's growing on me, even though I did like the "craziness" of it! To each his own, right? But when I was told it could be harmful for the plant (the branches could break off in random places from being top heavy), I decided to do what's best for it. And my cuttings are rooting now, but you're advice about keeping them upright was helpful for my next pruning (I didn't realize that's why people keep them upright!). Comments (18)Update time! I've begun watering the plants occasionally and lightly. New growth is popping up everywhere. Tiny, but definitely there. This is why I love Jades. I don't know of any other plant that is this easy except perhaps Sansevieria, haha, but propagating those appears to take an eternity. I once placed some cuttings into a pot, and a year later, the three cuttings were still there, alive and looking exactly the same as before. As I was tossing them, I just checked to see if there were roots and there were plenty. It just didn't plan on doing much else. But Jades... plant 'em and they grow. My kind of plant. This was one of the last pots I made with the larger stems. Not sure where I'm going with this but we'll see, I guess. The best part is that five other people have about 10-15 cuttings each from just these plants. I didn't even touch my other jades to supply those, so it makes me happy to know that two plants provided that many new plants to other people. For me, plants are like food. Food is great on its own but really, the greatest joy is in sharing that food. I've "dismembered" so many of my plants that my mother shakes her head at me asking why I bother growing plants if I'm going to make them all so ugly by chopping at them to give them away. Comments (1)No plant likes to be rootbound. What they like is for their roots to NOT rot, which can happen so easily in a pot with dense soils, like ground dirt, or bagged mixes of predominantly tiny particles of peat. Having very little soil around the roots makes it difficult for even the most dedicated plant-overwaterers to rot the roots of their plants. This is not ideal, just a way of coping with inappropriate "ingredients" in a pot. A more porous, chunky soil (like cactus/palm, if one is buying bagged,) can have air in it even when it is moist. Roots need oxygen and moisture at the same time to function. When there are tiny particles of any kind in a pot, such as peat, sand, silt, clay, they filter into all of the tiny spaces in a pot, eliminating the air. "Overwatering" is the label and manifestation when roots have suffocated and/or rotted, combo of both. There is no one thing folks can put in to make soil better, but removing tiny particles of any type will definitely help. Over time, organic bits decompose into smaller bits, so even the "best" soil, if it has organic components, will need to be replaced when this happens. Comments (7)Skyler This is JMO and probably very simplistic terms: if you want to grow 'real bonsai', then you need to learn a lot about all techniques that make bonsai a bonsai. ..."The ultimate goal of growing a Bonsai is to create a miniaturized but realistic representation of nature in the form of a tree"... I refer to plants growing and being 'shaped' without this knowledge as a 'bonsai-like'. I think that is easier without knowing and using proper techniques. And they can look really great. Do you know how you want your jade to look - eventually? (You did say that..."I'm not sure what shape to go for"... but maybe you have some idea how big you want it? Do you want it to look like a tree that is very symetrical? Round? Conical? Or? I think of jades as fast growing. Others may think of them as slow growing. Regardless, to get any plant to grow into certain shape will take some time. I agree with above comments to let it grow some. Compact growth is important if you leave it growing as it wants to, or if you want to shape it. Having a branch doesn't really make it better or worse candidate for bonsai I think, but it may help a lot in good growth. Branch that low - at the soil line, may or may not be suitable for 'the Bonsai look' in the future, but it is very easy to prune off any branches one doesn't like. 8 years agoSo there was actually closer to 12 plants, I kept fiveish in the original pot and added a mix of sand perlite and potting soil, they came apart nice and easy, I used the same soil mix to pot the other 5 separately I got the soil lightly moist, left 3 on my window sill with the original pot of 5ish, and the other 2 went in my aquarium of cuttings.
Should I water regularly now, or should I be careful, also what kind of lighting should I be using(keep out of direct sun light?)
I really appreciate any tips or comments.
