That sounds right to me, too. Actually the other marigolds are turning purple, too. The seed leaves for both the 2 foot and 6 inch marigolds are purple withthe larger ones more affected. The zinnias are completely fine though-- but then again, they are not dealing withthe seed leaves thing. Does that put stress on plants? Also how do I keep them covered if they are in a 72 cell tray with others being hardened off? --Zinn

Was this a potted plant you purchased and planted? Or a plant dug up from an existing patch and transplanted? Just asking as the photos show it dried up due to not being watered enough or from not having enough roots to support the new growth. It was a mighty big plant to move and perhaps would have benefitted being supplied some temporary shade until it rooted in well. I move black raspberries in the spring from my existing plants but find them best to transplant when they just start to leaf out in the spring and do not have so much new growth. Judging from the tall cane in the photo with very dark bark color, that is not a new rooted tip that you are transplanting.

I would put a wire cage or several more sticks like the one in your pic) around it, and put shade cloth (you can get it at any nursery) over the sticks or cage (not touching the rose), for at least a week. Once it started to get scorched, the symptoms do not disappear overnight. After a week I would take off the shade cloth, but keep it where it is so it gets some shade in the afternoon. I would NOT cut off any leaves - just leave it alone, except for water and shade. It is a baby, and needs all of the leaves it has, even dead ones help shade the plant. Jackie

It looks like all the overwatered FLFs I've read about on the houseplants forum, and all of them have turned out to be caused by overwatering. 'Overwatering' happens when the soil stays saturated for long periods of time, preventing air from prejudicing oxygen to the roots, leading to dead and rotting roots and a plant that starts to kill and drop leaves its reduced root system can no longer support. You might want to scan the first page or two on that forum for FLF threads, but meanwhile I'll ask a few questions: Does the pot have a drain hole? How do your water--on a schedule, when the top of the soil is dry, or when the soil at the bottom of the pot is dry? Do you give it a fixed volume of water, or water until it drains freely from the pot? Does the pot ever sit in standing water? What kind of soil are you using? Have you potted up (put the plant in a bigger pot with new soil around the existing rootball) or repotted it (removed all old soil from the roots, pruned errant roots, and replaced the soil with all new mix)?
