Covid-19 Wrong End of Telescope?
Comments (114)I just heard Jacob Ward* on CNN say a few interesting things. 1. That with the case of the woman patient in Northern California, 36 nurses had to be quarantined! That’s a lot of staff missing from duty. 2. That the travel ban is misdirected. (Could you guess that xemophobe Stephen Miller wrote Trump’s speech? “Foreign” Disease.” The Covid-19 virus is here in the US and elsewhere already already. (not sure if rest is from Jake Ward or another good guest) 3. TESTING TESTING TESTING (and no backlogs, please)! Testing allows epidemiologists to learn where our own hotspots are. We need to be able to plan & allocate resources. A few days ago, some expert said that one thing large scale testing for the Covid-19 virus does, is allow pretty good zeroing in on who’s got the virus, where they are. They (epidemiological detectives) can interview patients and use various paper, mobile phones and electronic tracking to help them figure out common trail and sources. (Cue up Forensic File music.) 4. One of the expert guests suggested, depending on how “hot” your area seems to be or likely will be, to postpone elective surgery to free up hospital beds. I guess my surgery is elective ;-/ but I am in significant discomfort/pain. I think it is a go home that day, but light general anesthesia or just put me in a coma. Small joint surgery. Alisande, Isn’t that laparoscopic gb surgery pretty much go home the next day? See what your docs advise. 5. The US has tested only a few hundred and there is a backlog on getting the tests processed. South Korea has tested a few thousand individuals, and weeks ago. The US has handled this situation so very poorly. The virus has exploded in such a short while. Maybe someone has accolades for the CDC leadership (Reddington (spelling), a nodding bobble head. Top leadership has been abysmal. Don’t hold out for a vaccine, even in 18 months. This is a tremendously difficult thing to achieve with a coronavirus. We can attempt to slow the spread, to flatten the curve, but this disease is going to sweep over us. “Social distancing” is one way to help slow things down. It is too late to stomp it out (on this planet anyway). Gird you’re loins, folks. Seniors congregated close together in nursing homes is a perfect set up for lots of very ill and dying citizens. It’s not going to be nice. ”We’re fighting an enemy and we don’t even know where it is,” says Ron Klain, former Obama Ebola czar, speaking of the incredible lack of testing. He also said that when you look at the Johns Hopkins virus map and see no red dots or blobs in an area (day Maine or Gondwanaland), it cannot be interpreted as meaning no Covid-19 there. Rather, it indicates that there has been no testing there. (Returning my tix to Gondwanaland.) * Jacob Ward is excellent. Smart, calm, trained, experienced....See MoreFlattening the Curve. Comments (67)Fori, you are so right about wearing a bandana or whatever in front of your mouth. To update: Some good news or not, depending on what this will do to the way we look. This video, by the same group, shows how a simple washcloth in front of the speaker's mouth basically contains pretty much all the droplets (> 99%) that are normally emitted when talking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OSz5Gr7gG0&feature=youtu.be...See MoreWhy their non-stop cough, is it the covid-19 or garlic?
Comments (17)Asthma is an effect caused by all sorts of things. Most people have inflammation in their lungs and that inflammation makes their lungs twitchy so some trigger, and that is usually very personal, causes the vasoconstriction that not only keeps you from getting air in but also keeps you from getting air out. Triggers can be allergy inducing particles or just any old particle, cold air (very common) hot air and so on. For many people set it off. You can get Asthma from chemical irritants, perfumes are common causes, or poisons, for me mentholated cigarette smoke is a trigger. Those of us with Asthma are at risk with Covid-19 of course. It is a strange that it is not a disease though that is how it is treated. It is a symptom. I can get sneezing attacks from the hot moist air of a shower. I guess I am lucky it would ease asthma for me. Covid 19 can cause sudden massive lung inflammation (ARDS) in some people and have massive out of control asthma. It is frequently fatal....See MoreMemorial Service during COVID-19
Comments (21)Greetings gardener123 ... who may be uncertain about rows 4, 5 and 6 ... but knows for sure that wewantsophie, I am unsure, given your concern of reality coming at you like a freight train, as to whether you are somewhat expecting that your patriarch's continuing life in this dimension may be coming to an end. That is a very difficult issue that in the ordinary course of living we don't like to contemplate: including this character who, in reasonably good health, is (slightly) closer to 100 than to 80! Then you speak of should your worst fears being realized and proceed to consider post-death planning, which leads me to think that you are considering your worst fears to be his death. May I offer an alternative suggestion? Some aged people, having undergone a very serious illness and having pulled through, are left so seriously disabled that they consider their continuing life to be of very little value, with little prospect of improvement. In this current covid situation, which is especially hard on old people whose auto-immune systems are low, many have been left with serious lung issues on a continuing basis, making breathing extremely difficult. I think that some people left seriously disabled may consider that situation worse than death. Unaware as I am of your loved one's prospects should he survive, I am reluctant to offer the message above and hope earnestly that it does not give you more fear, uncertainty and pain. How pleased and thankful you must be to see the many tributes offered by so many people who felt blessed by his kindness. What a fine example he has offered to not only you, his loved ones, but to the community in which he lived, and we are in great need of such examples in these troublous times. Some have referred to faith connections but I do not find such a reference in your message. While you may not wish to consult funeral practitioners about the size of groups and other circumstances related to death, if you have connections to a faith group, if you consult those leaders, I'm sure that they will be able to offer such information. As has been said, likely there will be severely restricted numbers allowed at a funeral gathering these days so, especially considering his having touched the lives of so many in such a positive manner, that a celebration of his life at a later time, possibly on an anniversary, might please many. Thank you for sharing your current pain with us. I hope that you find a measure of satisfaction, community spirit and peace of heart from having done so. I offer prayers on behalf of all of you at this stressful time and send my good wishes to you. In our area, news this morning was that 20% of our covid sufferers are inmates and staff of seniors' long term care facilities and 80% of deaths are seniors. ole joyful...See MoreKathsgrdn
