Looking for good recliners, couch and chair
Comments (3)It depends on how much you are looking to spend. I will say one thing, motion furniture just generally don't last as long as stationary furniture because the motion mechanisms will break after a while (and the act of motion puts much more strain on the fabric/leather). The best reclining mechanisms are made by Leggett and Platt and Universal. You can find these in any number of lower middle to high end brands and they generally will break eventually no matter what brand they are installed in. Lazyboy does lifetime guarantee their mechanisms. When they break eventually, you will have to replace the mechanism yourself or pay someone to do it though. They will only send you the parts. This is typical for most brands that offer a lifetime mechanism warranty. If you just in general want high quality, Hancock & Moore is pretty much the gold standard of upholstery, but it is pricey. Despite their warranty, lazyboy is generally not considered to be well made any more, however, I would say they are likely not to go bankrupt in the next 10 years as income has been stable the past few years and they are sufficiently diversified. I'd stay away from Lane, Broyhill, and Thomasville (and any of their sister brands). Their parent company (Furniture Brands International) basically went bankrupt a little while ago and the pieces got bought out by an equity firm. The new owners have been closing factories and liquidating assets. My guess is that it will eventually go the route of outsourcing all product and just maintaining the name brands (similar to a lot of shoe companies and other products), but its still a little early to tell what is going to happen. Comments (11)Bbstx, I have only had our sofa for about two months but haven't noticed the indents getting dusty even though I am sure my cleaning lady misses getting into them. I took a cloth to it and didn't see dust on it but ours is leather and wouldn't hold onto dust as quickly as fabric. I have a block front chest on the one end and a gaming table temporarily on the other end. Both pieces are a good bit higher than a normal end table but are still maybe six inches below the top of the arm. I would definitely use higher pieces as the scale with a regular height probably would look off . I linked a pic of our sofa at the furniture store. It isn't a true chesterfield but has the same arms and tufted back. It is way more masculine than what I was going for (hence my longing for sapphire velvet) but now I love it! I just measured and the block front chest and gaming table are both 29 inches high and the sofa arms measure 35 inches but as you can see from the picture the sofa is large. Here is a link that might be useful: Our sofa...See MoreLivingroom Updates with Chesterfield style sofa
Comments (2)I find the chairs are a bit heavy/dated compared to your other choices and thought you might like these two, as an example. They feel more modern and the first is a recliner 😀 Instead of navy, cream would be very complimentary but you may worry about keeping clean so could look for slipcovered chairs with an ottoman instead of a recliner, opening up more options I’d stick to a solid fabric on chairs and for interest, add lots of cushions and you won’t be limited trying to compliment a patterned fabric. For sure white linen-like drapes and IKea has nice ones at good prices. Thought the room below (imagine seating color in reverse) may help you with envisioning your room - white walls and curtains, accent cushions that compliment rug. May feel very similar based on what you provided. I think it’s a lovely room...See MoreChesterfield sofa!
Comments (21)Is the room for family TV watching only or is it also for entertaining? If it is for the family and the TV, I would get the sheepskin chair I posted earlier, and I would get a big square or round tufted ottoman for a coffee table/foot rest. If it is also used for entertaining, I would pick a chair with some Hollywood Regency glam to it, or at a minimum velvet in a rich color and a glass or faux-stone coffee table with a heavy-ish gold or silver toned base. In addition to painting the media unit (and removing the curtain behind the TV) I suggest taking everything off the mantle except the candlesticks. There is a lot of dramatic fixed things in the room now, so having that space above the mantle as a breathing space is fine. The decorative fireplace and moulding is enough decoration for that side of the room. Maybe eventually you’ll spot a perfect black and white drawing for that space, framed in white. This would make a nice emergency seat or a nice side table for a chair in your room, depending on the chair. It needs a tray on top to make it useful as a place to set down a glass of liquid....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
