A Study in the Classics: The Chesterfield Sofa
7 reasons to consider this traditional and timeless tufted seating option

I love dimples, but only on faces and Chesterfield sofas. It's amazing the words people use to describe tufted sofas, especially this iconic piece. Chesterfield sofas have graced the homes of many since the 18th century. Named in honor of Philip Dormer Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield and then tastemaker, he wanted a sofa that would allow a gentleman to sit upright on a sofa and remain comfortable. Apparently, this guy was no slouch.
The Chesterfield has remained the same after all these years. Its deeply-buttoned upholstery, equal height rolled arms and back, and nailhead trim is most often seen in leather, but is offered in a variety of fabrics. A timeless option if shopping for a new sofa, the Chesterfield though traditional, has a place in any home's decor.

Traditional meets transitional in this room designed for entertaining conversations. A color palette of blues and greens cools off the warmer version of the Chesterfield sofa.
Sleek metallic leather catapults the Chesterfield sofa into the ultra-modern category. Tufted-back slipper chairs mimic its deep-buttoned upholstery and makes for an impressive furniture complement.
On a smaller scale, the Chesterfield design is equally effective in a loveseat. Its two-seater design makes it perfect for more intimate conversations.
In its most popular setting, a Chesterfield sofa sits handsomely in a library. Outfitted in a rugged distressed leather, its form still remains both stately and proper.
The new traditionalists enjoy pairing a Chesterfield sofa with its modern counterparts. Both sofas, though very different, play well together in this warm New York City loft.
Traditional meets Hollywood Regency in this Venice Beach cottage. The Chesterfield sofa, with all its pomp and circumstance, makes a stylish statement, yet still provides a pair of zebra printed bergere chairs room to shine.
This well worn leather Chesterfield sofa is proof that it only gets better with age. The genius combination of leather, comfort, and form will always stand the test of time.

I love the appearance of the chesterfield, but the back is way too short (as are most sofas). If the goal is to be able to be comfortable without slumping, then the back really needs to be 24"+ tall. Otherwise, people are going to slump down anyway just so they can find a place to rest their head.
The arms of the chesterfield, if also 24"+ tall, would function more as support to help hold up the sofa occupant if they started to list to one side.
