Wow, I can see why you are stumped. I think you need a strategically dumped glass of juice to help that tv out the door. As you know, it is just waaay to big for the room. Are you planning for a flat screen over the fireplace in the future? Not sure what you need to keep in the room and what can go, but my feeling is that there is too much firniture and much of it doesn't go together. I think you need to edit. Right now it seems like you are trying to have 2 focal points and all the furniture angled to face both. In my opinion this is a mistake. You need to treat each separately. It's hard to tell, but if you have enough room I'd place two small side chairs in front facing the fireplace with a rug in front of them. If this isn't feasible because of space, do one on either side of the hearth facing out. Angle them towards each other a bit. Another option that might work better is to do a rectangular ottoman in front of the fireplace. Straighten out the sofa so that it is facing the tv straight on. Leave 3ft between the wall and the sofa table. If you don't have room, lose the sofa table -you don't need it. Try either the large chair in the corner or the recliner on the right side of the couch facing the fireplace. Lose the little vanity. It doesn't match the other pieces in the room in terms of scale. The pictures could be hung on the wall in a nice grouping. Invest in a whole bunch of matching frames (I'd go black) reframe all the pictures and hang on teh wall. Target and Micheal's sell packs of frames for not too much. Also, I'd get rid of the white chair and the wicker. Again they seem out of place and I'm betting don't really perform any function in the room. I'd like to see a darker rug in front of the sofa. The light one doesn't seem to really go with anything in the room but maybe it's just my monitor. Hope some of this is a help, but let us know what needs to stay in the room and what could go.

Great options! I did think about the metals on top and then put a glass top. @palimbs, Warmer orangey wood look is the kind of look/stain I was thinking of. @cawaps, the dilemma with adding metal I don’t know what metal finish goes with the warm wood (somewhat Nordic look, I think)

It's hard to tell from your floor plan, so here are my suggestions: 1. Determine how many people will usually be sitting in these rooms. 2. Get measurement of each room - width and length - great room and gathering room. 3. Look at some of your favorite furniture websites and get measurements of their upholstered chairs and sofas. Some websites have floor plan furniture mockups that you can do. I'm not that tech savvy! Hopefully you are. If you're like me, you'll do the old school thing and cut out a sofa and chair from a piece of scrap paper. Do it to scale for a piece of paper 8 1/2" by 11". Write up your room measurements with 3-6 feet around each seating arrangement - 27 inches at the very minimum. Some people like a room full of furniture - I like a room with a lot of room to move around - it's a personal preference thing. 4. Determine what your focal point is. It may be a window view, fireplace, tv, or wall decor. I have no view, so in my living room it's the tv and wall decor. 5. When your furniture comes in, (if you're like me) you may need to move it around a few times until you get it where you like it. Keep us up to date!

Lets break this down a little area 1. landing and entry, no real sitting furniture goes here area 2. dining zone across from the kitchen area 3 living zone, tv on the back wall were the current accent wall is long narrow sofa with two swivel chairs. or 4 recliner cozy chairs, create a little media room there, maybe even tv on the stairwell wall. area4. some chairs in front of the fireplace. OPEN areas are good in this house especially with the way the flow from the stairs to the kitchen is. Also, just had the thought this might be a great house for a projector screen rather than a tv, something that could roll up when not in use.
