I think you need to decide if the tv unit or the fireplace is going to be the focal point in the room. When you say you moved the fireplace, do you mean to it's location in the pictures? Was it originally where the tv is now? and if so, does this mean you can move it easily to another location?

You have some nice pieces to work with in the room, but I agree that the layout as it is is not working. Does the tv have to stay in this room?

we moved the placement of the fireplace from where it was on the houseplans when we built. It can't be moved now . Unfortunately the tv must stay in that room. I'm hoping it dies any day so we can get a smaller flat screen.

Wow, I can see why you are stumped. I think you need a strategically dumped glass of juice to help that tv out the door. As you know, it is just waaay to big for the room. Are you planning for a flat screen over the fireplace in the future?

Not sure what you need to keep in the room and what can go, but my feeling is that there is too much firniture and much of it doesn't go together. I think you need to edit.

Right now it seems like you are trying to have 2 focal points and all the furniture angled to face both. In my opinion this is a mistake. You need to treat each separately. It's hard to tell, but if you have enough room I'd place two small side chairs in front facing the fireplace with a rug in front of them. If this isn't feasible because of space, do one on either side of the hearth facing out. Angle them towards each other a bit. Another option that might work better is to do a rectangular ottoman in front of the fireplace.

Straighten out the sofa so that it is facing the tv straight on. Leave 3ft between the wall and the sofa table. If you don't have room, lose the sofa table -you don't need it.

Try either the large chair in the corner or the recliner on the right side of the couch facing the fireplace. Lose the little vanity. It doesn't match the other pieces in the room in terms of scale. The pictures could be hung on the wall in a nice grouping. Invest in a whole bunch of matching frames (I'd go black) reframe all the pictures and hang on teh wall. Target and Micheal's sell packs of frames for not too much.

Also, I'd get rid of the white chair and the wicker. Again they seem out of place and I'm betting don't really perform any function in the room.

I'd like to see a darker rug in front of the sofa. The light one doesn't seem to really go with anything in the room but maybe it's just my monitor.

There isn't enough room to do the two chairs facing the fireplace. I can lose the white and wicker chairs. We were just trying to maximize seating. I love the vanity (it was my Granny's) but I guess I just don't know what to do with it. I went with the light rug because the furniture was so dark and I was hoping to lighten up the heavy feeling of the room.

I'll try straightening the couch and adjusting the other chairs. Thanks for the suggestions. Any ideas what to do with the wall once I yank the vanity?

I like budge's suggestions - we are on the same track. As far as the wall where the vanity is, why don't you put the sofa table there as a console table? You could hange a mirror above it to reflect the light and brighten the room.

I would also suggest simplifying your accessories on top of the tv and adding a large piece art or a series of several framed prints over the tv. Right now that wall seems too wide and short. Art will draw the eye away from the tv.

It's a lovely room - just needs some tweaking.

We have a similar floor plan issue with our family room--we have lots of doorways to other rooms, and a fireplace flanked by french doors. Because we don't have any walls, we have decided to float the furniture. We have our TV in the built-in cabinet that's on the wall adjacent to the fireplace, so we have two focal points as well.

Right now we have a three-seater couch facing the fireplace, a loveseat facing the TV, (so they make an L) and a chair next to the loveseat, away from the couch.

With our new furniture, we will have the three-seater facing the TV, two swivel chairs facing the fireplace, and a big leather chair between the fireplace and TV walls.

Here's another floor plan we were considering:

How about switching the big chair in the corner .... and angling the TV into the corner? At least the huge back of the TV would be in the corner -- and you would gain more seating area .....

Then try the sofa along the big wall (where the TV now sits) and float the two dark chairs facing the fireplace (and the new TV position) I wonder if there would be enough room to add a loveseat facing the fireplace (and the new TV position)?????

Yes -- I do agree with the excellent thoughts above about the lighter furniture -- and the rug. A darker rug would help to balance the other dark elements. Add more lamps to add more warmth around the whole seating area.
