Honolulu MCM living room layout…

We recently relocated from SF to Honolulu, and after moving in, have found some additional space in the living room (approximately 9.5 feet by 7 feet). We would like to incorporate additional seating that will flow with our existing style and layout and be guest, kid and dog friendly. I was wondering about an another couch, chairs or eames lounge chair, but I am stuck! Mahalo for the help.

Try this, place your seating on a rug centered in the room. Get two swivel chairs to enjoy the view, the TV or the conversation. Split the ottoman into two footrests that can double as extra seating or with a tray for drinks. Place a console table under the seascape photo.

Whatever you do, get a massive round coffee table and some floor pillows or poofs so kids can sit on the floor and play at the coffee table. My grandparents had this set up and my cousins and I spent so much time on the floor in the living room because of it.

If the room is super narrow, I'd put the TV on the wall between the kitchen doors, couch opposite it under the windows (don't set it right against them- leave some space for the heating) and get some light-blocking curtains if the glare is an issue during the day. If space allows, you could square up your entertainment stuff on the shell wall, put your couch opposite it, but place it about 2/3 of the room away from it. Depending on the width of the room, your MCM chairs could be angled facing the couch conversationally or both placed under the window side by side.... lots of things you can do! You can put your put the piano on the wall by the kitchen with a LARGE colorful (or black and white if that's what you love) art piece hung over it to make a statement. Doesn't have to be expensive- grab a 20% off coupon for bed bath and beyond 😜! And you still have for an entryway built-in by the door if you want. Your bookshelves might be able to go by the front door. 🤷‍♀️

I doubt you can squeeze the bookcase and sofa on shelf wall. There is a sequence to use in redesigning a room. 1. Determine layout of main pieces. 2. Select rug(s). 3. Select wall and ceiling color(s). 4. Paint. 5. Ensure everything works well, make adjustments as needed. 6. Set out wall hangings to determine best layouts. 7. Hang art. 8. Add final accessories such as decorative pillows and throws, trays and plants. Sometimes this sequence isn’t possible but if not roughly followed a lot of redo is generally needed which takes more time and resources.

Cute pooch. Is the eighteen feet from the by window to the tv? If so, you could leave six feet between the back of the sofa (centered with the bay window) and the bay window for your play area. Then use the rest of the area for your living room space. If you want to try centering the back of the sofa across from the bay window, then measure the space between the side of the sofa and the wall with the two smaller windows. It may be that you have room there to place your desk/table with metal legs in that spot with its chair sitting in the play area. A tall thin metal lamp with large white shade on it could serve the living room as well as the desk. If not, find another side table/cabinet for that space for that purpose. You could plan a place in the play room for a bed for the family pet. Underneath the bay window, you might want a window seat that doubles as toy storage, preferably with front doors if the children are small. If you want a TV in that room the only place it can really go is to the right of the fireplace (maybe to the left if you find that works better for you). It is never recommended to put it over the fireplace unless there is nowhere else for it to go. You have more than enough space on the right for a nice console. Maybe in the future you can do something more dramatic with the fireplace as it looks small in that large wall (or maybe you are already and it's not finished yet). Put a tall piece of art over it (something that is less wide than the fireplace). Face your sofa toward the fireplace and TV. The dining table should have the long side parallel to the slider. I can't imagine it fitting the other direction. I don't think it's a bad thing to have your old furniture in there for a while. It will help you get an idea of the right size for new pieces. You may also get better advice if you post a graph paper drawing of the space so the commenters know exactly how much space you're working with. The perspective in pictures is sometimes misleading.

Really important to decide on the layout before deciding on the type of seating to buy.

1) I think centering the seating area (with a LARGE dog friendly rug to ground) and a LARGE coffee table is the way to go, placing sectional facing the sliding door with LARGE lol art above.

2) Imagine below, but locations of doors and console (which will house tv) are exchanged.

3) Your low rust seating opposite sectional (vs chairs in picture) and add two really interesting chairs at this end facing tv.

Highly suggest you find an on line room planner and input room’s dimensions and structural components, which will make the decisions much easier.

I like tracefloyd's arrangement, but i would put the TV on the end wall to avoid glare from the windows. Then turn the entire arrangement around to face TV and put a console and the big art on the wall opposite the window so art is away from direct light. The console should be at least 25% wider than the art, and the piece under TV be equally larger than the TV. On a wide wall like that end one, you can go even bigger. and can use some art along with it.

You might consider moving the TV to where you currently have the artwork, float the sectional on a large rug in the room facing the wall it is currently on and then you could potentially add seating behind the sofa once you move it.
