We have this 8x6 entrance space we never use!

Looking for design and function advice to make this "entrance" into a play room for our 4 yr old.

You might try this trick with the closet. Lots of toy storage there and easy to hide if need be.

I'd put a rug on the floor, shelves in the closet and a table and chair. How hot does your radiator get? And how fragile is it? If it's sturdy and never gets too hot, then all's good. If the radiator is fragile, put a long table in front of it.

Good idea to add doors to converted garage and use it as an office/play room. If you use the sectional in the original living rm., can you remove the middle seat area to make it shorter? Then put it in front of the living rm window and your t.v. and console opposite on wall next to pantry bump out. There will be more walking room to office/playrm. Unfortunate your sectional ends can't be reversed for this reason. Or keep current sectional in office and put new furniture in original living area that will fit the space, such as a shorter sofa under the window and two chairs. Or shorter sofa to make an entrance corridor along front door area and chairs in front of window. Add taller bookcase to bump out area and another chair angled along back of kitchen wall next to t.v. console.

Kulrn, did a lot of measuring to get the frame even, basically found the the centre of the wall, decided how high I wanted the top row and measured the two hanging brackets (is that what you call them?) on the back of the frame and placed the picture hangers. From there I made a template that included the space needed between the frames to place all of the hangers, measuring to make sure they were level each time. It was surprisingly easy, getting the first one hung right was the most important. Then I just popped them all on the wall. Happy to report I didn’t need to hammer any extra holes.

Thanks. The office set-up is just in there temporarily for COVID. We have a built-in table for 8 in the kitchen w/the ability to extend, so we don't need a dining room and the living room we have in back is much bigger. Mostly the room has sat unused for the last year. Agreed on the space being best near where we spend our time until they're old enough - that floor is kitchen & living room, so between the two, that's really where we'll be.

Some suggestions: --Remove, remove, remove gigantic blue chair/beanbag. You have a massive sofa which is sucking up most of the space and light in your room. Get rid of Big Blue today! --Replace the kids' storage cabinet under the window and the cabinet under your TV with a very long, low, wide shelving with baskets, which is the only place the children's toys will go. The shelves should run from one end of that wall right to the edge of the stairs. Rotate kid's toys out elsewhere so that you only have one storage center for them. --Swing the sofa around so that half of it is under the window and the other half is facing the TV and new storage. Move it forward enough so that you create an entryway from the front door with the back of the sofa. --Orientation here isn't right, but here's how to use the entry space you create once the sofa is moved forward, the blue chair is gone. Wouldn't you want your living room to look a little like this? Alternate layout: Bring sofa toward TV wall as suggested but forward enough so that you can use the corner created behind the sofa, that's unused now, for a small play area for the children. Put easel there, some small chairs. We don't have measurements, so I'm not sure how much space you might have to work with. --Decluttering should come first, but if you see some examples of layouts that would really work for you, then move that sofa now. Forget about pillows, throws, etc. Down the road get a really nice art work and those lovely Roman shades Nancy suggested to pull the eye away from the massive sofa. --Going forward: Get two small leather storage ottomans, not one big one. (Measure how much space they'll take up--I'm just showing this one as an example. They're not hard to find in all colors. You want soft corners for the kids' safety.) Pick storage ottomans in a light, pretty color that will echo some art work or Roman shades:

Actually, it doesn't seem like a good idea because there are too much corners, jambs and doorways - may be very traumatic..

That door looks like it goes to the outside, yes? I'm assuming this is a door that isn't used often or at all? If there's no danger of opening the door into your kid's play area and possibly hurting someone, then sure. Set it up as a play space. I'd leave the closet door off and fill the closet with shelving for toy and art supply storage that can easily be accessed by your kid. Get some carpet tiles in there to warm up the space and make it cheerful. Find a small table and chairs to put on the side opposite the closet for projects, puzzles, etc.

I would make sure the door is not able to be opened for sure but also sure you would have thought about that. I agree that some storage for sure and a good time to teach a child about clening up at the end of the day and nice to have a designated spot for all the kid clutter.I woudl not do any permanaent stuff on the walls but chalk boards hung like art anre awesome. A chair is a great idea and a little table and a chair for her if there is room. I agree the floor is probably pretty cold so a nice washable rug could be great. For me the big issue would be the kid clutter seen from the LR so the clean up at the end of day IMO is a must.

I’d put a fun hangingWhat a fun project! Please post photos when you are done. chair in the corner with the radiators, a little side table and sturdy lamp next to it, and then book storage around it on the walls. IKEA picture shelves or spice shelves would work well. The closet would have a desk with good lighting for art projects and include shelves for toy storage. You could use the empty wall next to the closet area for a blackboard, and bulletin board, just like Decoenthusiaste‘s picture. Great place to hang that art, and clutter is out of sight. Finish off with an area rug with a fluffy pile as high as possible to maintain clearance for the door and place a throw on the chair. 😊

I'd start with a camera. There's space in there that you can't comfortably see from the other room.

I would start by just putting his things there…see if he gravitates there…it feels confining to me…more like a space to just keep his things…to be put back after playtime…( a little lesson in responsibility by itself)…

I wouldn't dedicate an entry as a playspace. Is that an entry door? That is not a good idea it will be too tempying for your child to mess with. Add a pretty storage chest/cabinet and shelves in the closet but the play area should be elsewhere, somewhere you catn see what your child is doing.

I like btydrvn’s comment to start out as a place to store toys. I also like Shelley Miell’s idea of a hanging chair, and Lyn Nielsen’s suggestion to make it special. One way to do that is to wrap the space in a removable wallpaper.
