Combining living area and dining area?
Comments (14)Here is an update. I plan to get a large dining table (enough to seat 8+ people), in front of a sofa that I would place along the wall on the right of this picture: Many couches don't aren't suitable for dining because they are much lower than the dining table and force you into a reclined position. So, I am thinking of something more like a banquette/upholstered wall bench. I am inspired by these pictures: I will see if I can find these at a furniture store, since the ones in the above pictures look like they are built into the house. I might get 2 of them, to go on different sides of the dining table. For seating around the rest of the table, I already own many of these folding chairs, which maybe I can use: What do folks here think of this? I'm a rookie at interior design. I want a decor that will make guests say "wow", so I'm curious for your opinions. I'm also looking for color ideas. As you can see in my original post, the main colors in the apartment are (1) faded blue/gray wallpaper, (2) very light wood on the walls/kitchen, and (3) light/medium wood on the floors. I am thinking to match the dining table with (2), and to match my sofa with the color of the brown chairs. Any other ideas?...See MoreMini Kitchen Update - need your help!
Comments (11)Hi mom2sethc! I remember your dining area update from the decorating forum. Your entire kitchen looks more like an "after" than a "before". I still understand wanting to update things because I am in the same boat. :) When I was debating about going really dark with my countertops, what I found very helpful was putting a bunch of black construction paper on my island and leaving it there for a couple of days to see how it would look in different lighting. You could do the same with plain white paper just to get an idea if you would like the look. I also printed out pictures of my kitchen and colored the countertops different colors (my kids kind of looked at me funny when I was doing it :) and it definitely helped narrow down what I liked and did not. I may be in the minority, but I would prefer your perimeter and island counters the same. Since your space is transitional, I definitely think you can do soapstone. I normally love white countertops, however, I think with the white chairs, door, bench, and lighting fixture over the table, the darker countertops provide a nice contrast. I like the backsplash with your floor. If you want to change it, what about something that has a mix of stone and glass? It's from the Tile Shop but I cannot seem to post the picture: http://www.tileshop.com/glasstile/glassstonemix/Multi-Calhoun-with-Glass/1626.aspx I think the above tile would look awesome with soapstone! This one is cool from GlassTileStore.com: http://www.glasstilestore.com/collection/stone-mosaics/glass-stone-tiles/tao-toffee-marble-glass-tiles-taotoffee.html They also show that one above as an accent row between subway tile. I would not do white ceramics as a backsplash. Your space is too warm, and coming from someone that has white ceramic tile, there isn't a lot of dimension to it. Here's one from Home Depot. It has brown instead of green in it. Hope this gives you some more ideas :)...See Morewhat’s the one thing you’d do to update this kitchen?
Comments (68)I agree that granite makes it outdated. The cabinets are of a darker shade, so I would recommend you to pick a lighter and brighter looking countertop, like white or light gray marble -looking quartz or some of the white granites, like River White. That would create a very nice contrast and open up the space considerably. Also, I would get rid of the granite on the walls. White marble tile (like Carrara marble) backsplash would add a touch of glamour and lighten up the space even more. Staining or painting cabinets may be pricey, so I would invest in painting only the island. By changing the hardware you can give the cabinets a totally new vibe....See MoreDining room..creating space in a small dining room /sitting room area
Comments (3)Without an actual to scale plan of the space there is no way of knowing what will fit and I love the low cabinet with the art BTW. I think you might be able to put a round table in the DR but I need measurements of the spaces I never like fake greenery or flowers and the mirror is really not reflecting anything worth seeing twice...See MoreSouthern Bell
