rug ideas with brown sofa

I am not a fan of the existing rug. Just moved to Phoenix so looking for a desert modern vibe. The flooring is an off white tile. Thoughts? Ps. Ignore the chest in background. I’m going to move it.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I love brown with navy. This PHOTO is a bit over the top, but illustrates the richness of this color combination. I am so bored with gray and greige. You could do a print on the ottoman and the chair, but it might be better to find an area rug that you like first. For instance, when you redo the colors in a bedroom, it's easier to match paint to the linens than the reverse. I think it would be similarly easier to match upholstery fabric to a rug. Something like THIS with THAT perhaps?

I’m following this post because I have the same issue with my living room — dark brown couch and very dark floors — brown overkill! Can I ask for more specific advice, if possible? Should my rug be mostly ivory, with tan accents? Or will the tan color bring in more “brown?” Should I paint the brown wooden top on my fireplace white to eliminate some of the brown in the room? BELOW: View from my entry foyer looking at living room. What can I place behind couch? The couch reclines, so it can’t be a sofa table. BELOW: 1. What color sideboard can I place under TV? 2. See room with yellow arrow. I have 3 swivel barrel chairs for that room (ivory color); must the rug in that room match the living room rug?

If your mantle and mahogany choices are staying- at least for foreseeable future- I’d get them in place first, but meanwhile “ collect “ rugs in your inspo book - some plain, some patterned. If you have kids you may not want a solid cream rug! I do love that patterned rug as it makes the floor color look great yet blends warm and cool for gray walls/ furniture and warm floors , warm wood furniture. So much more interesting and lively than gray gray gray. I tone who thinks bits of black are ok with dark brown furniture or vice versa, not all matchy, and it’s not hard to repeat a few black accents. OTOH you might find a similar rug with chocolate brown. Meanwhile if you want to play with some colors and patterns IRL you could find some pillows that are returnable and see how you’re leaning. Pillows can be found cheaply but then may be … cheap. I always try to get removable zipper covers in fabrics that feel good, can be washed, and use feather inserts ( although some folks prefer poly fills), and & try to find ones I love looking at, then I can keep pillows fresh & switch covers occasionally by storing covers themselves.

The West Elm rug @kurln posted has a modern take on Southwest feeling. Is there a reason you have a brown accent wall? (Camouflaging a TV maybe?) Plus what looks like a tall brown wood piece of furniture in back of the couch? That's a lot of brown in a room if the wall is that color, too.

That's a nice rug. Pull complementary colors from it for a brighter accent wall and throw pillows. It could work. Try that first before getting another rug.

Is the rug not bright enough? It is rather muted. Fariza wool rugs are nice and modern with tribal/SW vibe.

The West Elm ones (both of them) look like they will brighten up the brown-ness of the couch. They both give you fun colors for accessories.

I love SO the rug you have. Would you post another photo? It doesn't look as if the sectional is positioned correctly on the rug.

The dark accent wall needs to go. Try this S W color.

Then add new pillows.

Add art on the white wall, with a brown frame.

If you can paint, use the color @juianna20 posted for you BEFORE you buy a new rug. That’s a great color for your living room wall.

When you move the furniture to paint, you will have an opportunity to reposition the couch and rug. Post a layout of the room, the size of the rug and couch and you’ll get help with placement.
