The rug is OK and I am loathe to tell someone to spend extra money when they just asked about curtains, but if you have an alternate spot for the rug or don't mind donating it to charity or something, I think you could do better with a different rug. The rug you have is nice, but very geometric and a whole different color palette than the couch. They kind of fight for dominance in the room. You might be able to find a rug that plays nicer with your couch, in terms of color and design. Maybe just work on the curtains, not worry too much about the rug, but then after you get the curtains, keep your eyes out for a better rug that "ties the room together." (Esoteric movie reference from "The Big Lebowski.") Use the floral design from the couch as your color palette when making choices for the room. Don't worry about the walls, they are pale enough to fade into the background once you get the curtains and some art up on the walls.

Jane's personal kitchen has a lot of Scandinavian and European influence I think, though she did throw in an antique dish cabinet that makes the area look rustic. She chose a Dornbracht tall faucet for the sink as I recall, and I saw a comment she made at Houzz afterward that made me think maybe her faucet hadn't turned out to be the best choice for her--still good, just maybe not as great as she'd hoped. I just ordered a couple of Brizo articulating faucets for my kitchen after much research and think I will be happy with them. The most memorable kitchen for me from Attic Mag's archives was the one with the working fireplace oven in the middle. It was such a simple kitchen with great functionality, and I think it was in Italy somewhere that she rented while on vacation. We really don't do kitchens like that here in the USA on any regular basis anymore now that gas and electric stoves have taken over.

I realize it isn't what you had in mind, but I think the "greige" sofa looks nice with your wall color. I also think the pillows it came with look nice in your space and like how the pattern (in your first picture) of the pillow relates to the object on the bottom right shelf behind the sofa. Sorry, I realize this probably doesn't help if it's not to your taste, but I think you have a nice start to a cozy basement. Also, I second the idea to keep your eye out on Craigslist, FB, etc., for art. I snagged a couple of HUGE framed prints I love for $10 each on NextDoor a couple weeks ago. When I got home I looked them up online by the artist signature and found they were almost $300 each to purchase framed. You can also try home stores (such as Home Goods and At Home) for mass produced art at reasonable prices.
