Flooring Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Wood floor cherry cabinets

New house and trying to change the hardwood floor colors and paint. Clearly the furniture will be gone and I will be starting fresh. Any suggestions would be so helpful!

Yes, I plan on refinishing it. I just hate the light color and yellow tints.

Do you think something like this would work?

Do you have the actual lighting in? Have you shown hubby what it looks like under the lighting. When I picked my floor color I picked one of the darkest ones out of the set I was considering and fretted about it being too dark (especially with my dining cabs being almost black) but now that its in place with the recessed lighting shining down on it it doesn't look dark at all - its all about the lighting (ignore the bright spot near the camera.. that is the light from the flash) - see it looks pretty dark in the corner on the right where there is no direct overhead light but elsewhere is looks medium. I think if it looks good hubby will come around - just let him think on it for a while and see it under the actual lighting (if possible). My DW was initially resistant on a lot of things until peices started to come together and she saw how good it was turning out. You can always resort to this tactic - worked for me everytime with my DW - let him invite some of his friends over and ask THEM about the floor without allowing him to say anything to influence their decision. Though I admit this tactic might not work as well on a man LOL.

Fori, I think FritzCat would object to being replaced by an orange tabby so we will really have to stay with modern/contemporary rather than vintage. ;) Jerzeegirl, yes, a lighter colored wood will likely show wear and tear more than something darker (as long as one doesn't go all the way to black) and with more pattern. But the light floor seems to work best with the cherry. Actually - our last floor (beech) was almost as light as the maple and the scratches didn't get bad until some time between 10 and 15 years. Then we refinished and that didn't hold up as long as the original factory finish. My husband is even more anti-bevel than I am. I did pick up a sample of the Mirage with micro-bevels today so we can talk about it. I've noticed even on the sample boards that I can feel a slight level difference between the square edged boards. The salesman today claimed that the bevel was also an advantage because sand that got tracked in would tend to settle into the bevels until it was vacuumed up instead of sitting on the surface where it could grind against the finish. We aren't on slab. The tract MCM houses like Eichler and Streng were normally (always?) on slab, but our house has a raised foundation. The back patio and pool area is higher than the ground under the house so that there is no going from the living room or family room to the patio so when people see that, they sometimes think the house is on slab.

By brick tile do you mean brick/subway in the sagey or celadon color.” Yes? ;) Actually I was thinking of a terra-cotta brick tile glazed in a celadon or silver sage so you wouldn’t really see it as being a terra-cotta tile. I don't find the cabinet/floor combination too bad. The floor color does provide a foil for the cherry cabinetry.

I think a dark floor would look nasty with those cabinets. Having some contrast is much more interesting and brightens the space.

So you're wanting a much darker kitchen? Here are two kitchens with dark cabinets + dark floor and the other with contrasting dark cabinets + light floor.

You might want to consider hiring an interior designer as someone else suggested or a color consultant since you're moving into a new house and starting from scratch. There are wall paint, furniture, and rug selections a professional can suggest that will bring out the warmth of the beautiful wood you already have without changing the floors.

My project is not complete but it’s moving alone. I did not like my kitchen in my new house…..so I changed it.
I questioned whether the traditional style of our 1970’s 2-story home could transform into the new millennium…I am thrilled.
Yet to do, the electrical, expand the window from 30” to 60”, hood and tile splash.

That brown floor stain can be a good classic color, but for your existing cabinets, I don’t think it will be a good combination. Lighter oak floors look great with dark cherry and you could refinish them to be a little less golden.
But it’s more about your goals for color palette and furnishings, and if want the whole- house floor color to go in a completely different direction, then at some point you might change your cabinets. And if you need to buy new furniture and all of your plans and choices look better with a different floor color. So it may depend on whether the kitchen’s looking “ off” will bother you more vs you feel you can decorate all the other rooms better with darker floor color.
I imagine you’re not in the house yet and want to do the floors first because it’s a PITA to do after. But if you are already moved in, I would take some time to assess a more pared- down look with your own furnishings.

I think you can get floor samples to bring home & look at. Also ditto the suggestion to look at a bunch of room photos with different floor colors to see if there is an inspiration palette or style combination of floor and furnishings.

It sounds like you are about to move into this house and want to get the floors done first. A lighter finish (as others have posted) will work with almost anything you choose to do with your new furniture. You can paint the walls a soft white (or ivory) to offset the dark cherry cabinets.

If you plan on painting (or replacing) the cabinets in the future, the lighter wood floors will go with almost anything you do.

For what it's worth to you, lighter floors are more popular now.
