I like it too! I have cherry with walnut floors which I like expect the walnut has lightened. Maybe a nutmeg which has more brown ??

try looking at a nutmeg stain. will you be doing this yourself or hiring? most flooring pros will give you samples on site and mix stains for a custom color.

Your cherry cabinets are so beautiful! Do you mind sharing the stain you have on them and how old they are? I'm seriously considering cherry cabinets and I want to find a stain that takes into consideration that cherry darkens over time.

Be careful when picking the stain. You need some contrast between the floors and cabinets. Which means going either lighter or darker than the cherry. I wouldn't go too dark because the cabinets are already on the darker side and dark flooring in a kitchen is a huge pain to keep clean.

With the cherry cabs it’s hard to get contrast without going too dark. And I don't think staining your floors lighter in your kitchen would fit with the style of your kitchen.

If you don’t like what you have now I don’t know that you will like natural either. It looks pretty similar to what you have. We have lighter cherry cabinets with natural oak floors.

Have you done a google search “dark cherry cabinets and brown wood floors”? That should give you some ideas of what you like and then the floor guy should be able to mix some colors to get close so you can see it in your house.

You have three choices....all of which involve water based finishes (to get rid of the orange). The FIRST choice (which is what you want most) is the go DARKER than the cabinets. If you do this, you will want to go 2-3 steps DARKER than the cabs. That would throw you into the deepest stains we have (so dark it will look almost black). I'm not a fan of super dark floors, but it is one way to keep the CONTRAST between the cabinets and the floors.

The SECOND option, which is one I prefer, is to go lighter/natural. In other words NO STAIN. Simply sand down and then coat in water based finish. If that is white oak, a sealant will be used as the first coat, and then 2-3 coats of finish over top (to prevent tannin pull).

The THIRD option, is to MATCH the colour. You would lay down a finish that is tone-on-tone with your cabinets. Maybe a step lighter than the cabinets. If you go with this option, you will have created a rather drab kitchen. I call it the "Brown Blahs".

Traditionally I suggest looking to the counter tops for inspiration but the brown in the counters is more brown TAUPE then cherry. If you add brown (without red) to this kitchen you will create a massive clash of tones.

Your professional will sand down your floors. S/he will then lay down colour patches directly to the kitchen floor. You will view these swatches in the 5 different lighting conditions present in a home (early morning, noon, afternoon, evening, night). Once you have seen them over a complete day/night cycle, you will then choose the colour that you prefer.

And make sure the professional adds a coat of finish over the swatches. Never pick a floor colour without the coat of finish.

I second this. It was my concern when you said you wanted a more brown floor but I am not a pro so I didn’t say anything. In my opinion many of the “Brown” floors I see with cherry cabinets just don’t look right because the tones clash. That may be why you are having such a hard time finding what you want.

Is it just the orange tone you don’t like in the lighter floor or is it the light color? Honestly we had light floors for 10 years in our old house, with a poly finish, and they never turned orange, maybe talk to different floor companies and see what they say? Our current floors are natural oak, no stain, 3 coats of a water based finish and one of an oil (maybe poly, not sure). They aren’t orange.

I’m curious how this ended as well. I have medium cherry cabinets and I’m struggling with trying to find the right light shade of stain.

Amendoim is a wood specie that blends well with Cherry cabinets in my opinion. Here is an installed job.
