Comments (7)"Bottom line? IMO..so much money was involved here that one would be hard pressed to find a politician that did or does not have his hand in the cookie jar somehow, some way." Here are a few more folks who have made out handsomely at the communal 'cookie jar'. Namely, Henry Paulson and his close circle of friends... Who is Henry Paulson? By Tom Eley September 23, 2008 The plan to rescue the US financial industry arrogates virtually unlimited money and power over the financial affairs of the state to the office of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Paulson is a figure with a long history of intimate connections to the political and financial elite. In 1970, fresh from the Masters program of the Harvard Business School, Paulson entered the Nixon administration, working first as staff assistant to the assistant secretary of defense. In 1972-73, Paulson worked as office assistant to John Erlichman, assistant to the president for domestic affairs. Erlichman was one of the key figures involved in organizing President Richard Nixon's notorious plumbers' unit that carried out illegal covert operations against the president's political opponents, including espionage, blackmail, and revenge. Ehlichman resigned in 1973, and in 1975 he was convicted of obstruction of justice, perjury, and conspiracy, and was imprisoned for 18 months. Utilizing his connections, Paulson went to work for Goldman Sachs in 1974. In a 2007 feature, the British newspaper the Guardian wrote, Not only was he well connected enough to get the job [in the Nixon White House], but well connected enough to resign in the thick of the Watergate scandal without ever getting caught up in the fallout. He went straight to Goldman back home in Illinois.... A link that might be useful: www.wsws.org/articles/2008/sep2008/paul-s23.shtml...See MoreEnlighten me. Comments (42)Rebeccamom - My project is scheduled for just after Labor Day. I had to move it out because of work and a family vacation. The extra time has been really great for sourcing and research and I would strongly encourage a 4-6 month window if at all possible. It seems there are so many decisions to be made in a bathroom reno. As far as measurements, my bathroom is a bowling alley! 4.5 feet wide by 11 feet long, not including the shower which is 4 X 2.75 off the long wall. Just to clarify, the $10K estimate is for labor only. I'm trying not to add up the cost of materials as I acquire them. It's painful having expensive taste on a middle class budget!...See Morewhat is typically included in a contractor's estimate?
Comments (15)My contract does not provide allowances for materials. Materials to be supplied by the contractor are bathtub, faucets, toilet and new window. Everything except the window is specific as to manufacturer and style numbers but not price. I am responsible for providing vanity, tile, grout, caulk, lighting fixtures and countertop. I also just realized there's no mention at all of the glass door and fixed glass panel for the shower. Interestingly, the contract specifies removal of the old light fixture, but does not mention hanging the new fixture. I don't think the overall price is outrageous, it's just more than I'm willing to spend for the project. If the contract provided more detail, I might be able to cut some things to bring the project within my planned budget. It would also be helpful if the proposal stated the total estimated square feet of tile to be installed so I can estimate my tile cost. I'll talk to the contractor on Monday. If he's not willing to work with me on budget, I'll find someone else. Now I'm better prepared to have an upfront conversation with the next contractor about my budget and my expectations. Thanks everyone for your help....See Moreestimating project costs
Comments (14)We recently did a renovation of our Master Bath. I called a few people, Home Depot wanted $45K, another guy wanted $35K. I wasn't looking for high end stuff either. Just a tile shower, tile floor and new drop in tub. I finally got a recommendation for a guy who used to live in my sub division. He did all the work himself, no sub contractors (except for the window replacement and the shower doors). He quoted me $24K, but there were allowances for items and I did wind up buying many of those myself and I saved money over his allowances. Mostly for the vanities, I went with stand alone vanities instead of built in, so I saved there. Also, where I live (Georgia) you don't need inspections or permits unless you are adding a new bath, so that saved me money. And I was really lucky that the guy did fantastic work and was great to work with....See MoreKendrah
