estimating project costs

Hi all,

First time posting. We are about to engage in a major home remodel. We knew going in that estimating costs would be incredibly hard. Case in point? When looking at two of the top sites that estimate costs of projects, you get WILD differences in cost. When looking at this site - https://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/2018/ , the cost for a bathroom remodel (mid-range) is $20,000. When looking at this site https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/bathrooms/remodel-a-bathroom/ , the average for mid range bathroom is $10,000!

I'm wondering what opinions are about this. Both of these sites are very frequented and appear linked from multiple reputable sites. These estimates are just the start (kitchens, decks, additions, etc.) are all at least DOUBLE between the two sites for national averages.

When you look at the more expensive estimate site, you'll find that adding a bathroom will cost $44,000. I know these things are expensive, but wow, I'd love to see an itemized breakdown of this. Labor has to be 75% of this.

Any thoughts or direction on which site is more realistic?
