Need a sturdy modern daybed with popup trundle

Daughter has a new condo and wants sleeping options in a second bedroom for guests including my husband who is 235. I believe that the old-time trundles were very sturdy but find mostly versions that are a 200 lb limit. Are we asking for too much?? Thanks for any advice!

Room & Board has trundle beds - I think they are listed under kids furniture but could be an option, solid wood frame so would be high quality enough for an adult (they also have a steel version)

Here is what I ended up doing: I ordered the Indonesian Daybed frame from World Market. It is not a living space but open to my living space. The cost was $329 as opposed to $849 Ballard bed, and the shipping was half of what Ballard charges. Of course I will still have to purchase a mattress. But I would've had to do that with the Ballard bed as well. I considered the bench, but since we do not have a guest room in our home, decided if we need an extra bed for an overnight guest, it would be great to have the daybed rather than the bench. We have lived here close to 5 years and have only had DH's brothers here in all the years we are here, so it wouldn't be that often, but it is good to have. I know it's a bed. We don't really sit over there anyhow. If I post a pic of what the space looks like now, you will all see what a vast improvement this will be. And since when guests come over, the space is the first thing they see upon walking into our home, I want it to look more like a defined space and not just a mish mosh of chairs, and toys, and baskets. I have 2 daughters, aged 6 and 8. Both are avid readers. It will be a fantastic place for them to curl up with a book. And to be honest, I look forward to doing this myself on occasion. I can't wait to put the room together. Hopefully this room will all be done by spring. Planning on new drapes as well, going to look at fabric tomorrow.

Val, I thought you'd like that bedroom. This friend is very talented in doing childrens room. She has a son too. Actually everything I've seen that she's done is magnificent. She really should blog, but she's quite busy redoing an old home they just purchased. Now let me tell you first, that I'm pretty much the last person that would normally tell you to do this as I happen to be a wood lover. Love the grain, the varying wood tones and just hate the thought of painting good wood. Deep breath. When looking at the furniture you have for your daughter I would think very hard about painting this before buying something else to paint. The chest of drawers would be so darling painted aqua with glass knobs and pulls to replace the current hardware. All you'd have to do was sand it or use a liquid sander to dull the finish, prime and paint. The bed could be painted the same way maybe using glass door knobs as finials on the bed posts. You can find them online if you search discount glass doorknobs for a very reasonable price. The desk would be harder to give the look you are going for since it's a bit MCM in styling so I'd replace that, but maybe look for a pretty dressing table like the one my friend used that could serve as a desk with the mirror down and later as a dressing table. And again, the bookcase you have now, more likely a combination of cabinet quality oak plywood and solid oak, with a little added crown molding along with a decorative base would look great painted too. Annaglypta wallpaper for the back of the shelves would add a cute touch too. Talk to hubby, tell him a wood grain nut that was given the salutation of "ack don't paint that!" by friends who know her well, thinks it's not a bad thing to paint these items. If you were going to keep them for use elsewhere in your home it would be a different story, but since you'll be selling them anyway to someone else that might paint them, why go to the trouble of buying something old from someone else just to paint it and then have to turn around and hopefully make what you spent on the old stuff in selling your stuff. You're welcome! For me, it was worth the extra expense to get an authentic looking and quality iron bed. I bought my DS a Wesley Allen bed before I found Charles P and it looks nice, it's a good bed, but it's very lightweight compared to this daybed and my DD2's antique iron bed. Charles P has free shipping right now and I might be mistaken but I don't think I was charged tax, since they're back east. I did wait a few weeks extra b/c I ordered it in a non-standard finish so they made one just for me, but it wasn't a long wait. Another option is Loading Dock Antiques where I bought my DD2's antique iron bed, but they don't usually have many daybeds. You can get a custom finish though if you decide to use a twin. They sandblasted mine to get the old paint off and repainted in a chippy, glazed antique white finish. It's a mom and pop shop (literally), and the wife would call me and send photos during the finishing process. Since it's an antique, it's a few inches wider than a standard twin, but it was easy and inexpensive to order a custom-size bunkie board from a local mattress manufacturer. I am also debating the sofa bed vs. daybed thing for the loft room in our condo. Or maybe I should just go with air mattresses for the occasional extra bed. I managed to forget about this for a few months so I'm glad the topic was brought back to my attention. Summer & extra guests are just around the corner. Have you seen the Simplicity sofa website? I am not affiliated with this company, I only offer the idea to you for your research. They have sofa beds with blow up mattresses, which really intrigues me. And their sofas arrive in pieces so it would be easy to carry & set up, unlike the heaviness of a real sofa bed. But how do they hold up? I don't know anyone with direct experience with them. Now that I'm thinking about it again I should search this site for any comments from prior customers. When one of my friends visits her family, she sleeps on an inflatable sofa bed & says it's very comfortable. She and her husband sleep on it for 1-2 months at a time so it must be okay. I don't know if the one she uses is from Simplicity Sofas or another mfg. What concerns me is that when I've slept on an air mattress, on the floor not as part of a sofa bed, I found them very cold & uncomfortable. A real sofa bed is better looking but much more expensive and in addition is very heavy to carry upstairs to the loft room. And are they more comfortable? I'll never sleep in it but I want the guests to be comfortable. But not too comfortable or they'll never leave. Now you can see why I put this out of my mind! Bottom line for me is looks-wise a sofa bed, with a real or inflatable mattress, does look the best in a room that isn't a dedicated guest room.

So your daughter is willing to commit to a bed, but not a queen size bed for the room? No one over 12 should be forced to sleep on a trundle bed.

There are new sofa beds that come complete with air mattresses included that are quite comfortable to sleep upon. I would consider that direction instead.

We found an option at IKEA that will work for adults and kids. Happy with our choice! Pull out with storage drawers makes one large bed. Thanks for the comments!

P.S. I think trundle beds are great, even for adults, and for your husband, if you want, you can have a wooden board cut to fit for under the mattress for extra support.

If you want to use it as a daybed, get large pillows made that are half the length of the bed and put the bed against the wall. Have zip off washable covers made.

We checked it out at ikea and were pleasantly surprised! You leave 2 4" mattresses stacked if one person is sleeping on the twin bed. When extending the bed, you move one of the mattresses to the side that was pulled out. Yes, comfortable!
