looking for input on paint for siding with my redbrick front home

last year

My home has a red brick front that will not be painted, but the 3 sides are currently white hardy board. The front door and shutters are currently black. We will be painting all painted surfaces within the next 2 weeks. The windows have white spokes between the panes of glass. I will not be replacing them so I am left with white spokes. The trim around them will be painted. I would like to chose colors to update the home. Considering a new front door and possibly updated garage doors. I welcome ideas.

Since windows are remaining white, I’d keep the siding and trim white…but lose the shutters. I’d replace the overgrown shrubbery and freshen up the landscaping.

Agree with tossing the shutters. Handsome cedar garage doors would look great. And while you’re upgrading, give some attention to the underwhelming sidewalk.

As I mentioned before my property was damaged in a fire and while I was fixing the place I wanted to somehow update the curb appeal. Many of you said the exterior wasn't a pressing issue. I've kinda cooled on the concept of a ventilation curtain cladding but still want some improvements to the front rooftop deck to make it more usable in the hot summer months and to provide some protection from the rain and wind. Do you think a shade structure up there will enhance or detract from the look of the place? I did my best to photoshop it into place. I'd use curtains to soften it and to make it more cabana-like. It is a louvered roof that opens to for more of a slatted trellis. I also need to raise the handrails about 8 inches to make it safe up there so maybe I'd add 1-foot tall ombre sand-blasted panels of glass that gives the effect of white smoke rising around the rails. BTW... I can make that shade structure up there ANY color I want. The frame can be one color and the interior roof with the paddles closed can be another. If I do it I would match the frame to the existing galvanized metal and make the ceiling white. Any input would be appreciated!

You need a color that works with your roof and your stone. Thats gonna be tricky because your stone looks to be beige but your roof is a dark charcoal. Gotta have something that works with your windows too unless you plan to change those. Check out Maria Killam blog. Tons of info and most of what im about to tell you comes from her and from the Brick and Batten blog. Get rid of the big ass bush and update your posts and railings. Go light and fresh on your paint. Offhand, id look at BM Edgecomb Grey. Its a green gray that will generally read ivory on exterior. Thats a wild guess you will need to test until you find the color thats right. BM white dove can also work with warm beiges but it has a little grey so might work with your roof. Get samples from samplize. Bigger and more modern house numbers. On the paint, light and monochromatic is current. Your garage door is too much real estate IMO to paint black. If you must go dark do something like Kendall Charcoal. A true black would be very harsh. Figure out body color first then your door and other accents. If all this seems overwhelming send pics of your house to BrickandBatten.com and they will do the whole design for you, as will Maria. You might try posting on other Houzz forums also which is free. Lots of good ideas there. Check out the before and afters on brick and batten and maria's blog. You've got a very nice house...with updates it could be a total knockout.

Jinx, yes there is a small area on the other side of the wall. It’s not large enough to be an actual courtyard, but we have a pebbles and pavers and plants. We would like to tear it down completely, but the reason it is there is to provide privacy from the street since we sit below street level. And the master bathroom windows are right behind it. The beams have so many years of paint on them, I’m not sure stain is possible at this point, but maybe we could paint them a dark brown. Would you keep the wall the same color that it is now or paint it a different color? I’ve seen that the urbane bronze is all the rage right now but I’m not sure how I would use that since it’s so dark. As for the stained glass, I’m sure we will sell it! A couple years ago we pulled a 3 panel stained glass window out of the master bathroom! I’m curious what people do with them!

I like the idea of doing board and batten on one side (maybe the front?) and doing the regular, cheaper siding on the sides. have you tried matching colors? Obviously your sides will barely be seen, so I get where you're coming from Color-wise, I think this would look amazing between your brick neighbors! what are you replacing the lattice with? What if you did something like this around the bottom? I love the brick w/the brick stairs. you could use similar red brick like the others. don't look too hard at the way the house is done, just look at the the way the stairs and foundation suport are done, along w/the blue color, and maybe the addition of wood (to warm up cooler tones) Also notice the diff styles of siding. here's board / batten on front (which I like) board and batten on the rear with some cedar (or cedar composite) shake in the gable portion. board/batten on the top w/regular on the bottom, cedar posts (which I like) Combo of both. I love this dark midnight blue color, especially between the two brick both batten and vertical on the balcony portion. James Hardie board and batten in the sage color w/black trim, warm wood. how it would look between the brick. You could also do a stone base foundation instead of the brick. Navy and crisp white. I'd do the wood porch and ceiling w/this Just look at the colors, not the style. too modern. I would suggest taking down the shutters too. However, I would take one down now and see how it's attached and what the brick looks like behind it. If those have been there for a while, there might be a bit of a color difference behind them. If not, then great- you can just proceed on. If there is, you might need to consider keeping them or maybe needing to wash the brick. If so, you want to do that before you start painting the trim on that side.

Remove the evergreen on the left. It's likely grown past the point of trimming back into a nice size and shape by now. Not sure about the tree on the right- is that a little maple type or something else? But some colorful plants in that bed and a new border on it wouldn't hurt. Not stone, maybe landscaping brick that reflects the house brick more nicely. Perhaps a skim coat on the sidewalk to freshen it up. And a border of that landscaping brick sunk flush into the ground around the outside edge of the sidewalk to really finish it off.

Different light fixtures over the garage doors. Right now they work with the brick and shutters, but not so much compliments the garage doors. I too think cedar would be handsome.

I would need to see what the house looked like without the shutters before deciding what to do about the door. But a light fixture change to go along with the ones above the garage doors. Perhaps a bit of a roof/awing bit over the door? Not a big something, but like the little half circle ones. A step worth of shelter at the door, not obsuring the transom at the top.
